Top 5 songs that made you want to learn Bass?

One song was all it took for the lightbulb to go off in my head.

The person who made me think ‘man playing bass looks fun’ was French House producer Fred Falke. I’ve always loved French House music; Daft Punk etc but when I heard the song ‘808 at Beach’ that Bass line is just killer. I stumbled across a video of him playing live on top of him DJing and thought. I should really learn bass because that looks awesome.

I still play that bass line as a warm up sometimes and it continues to make me smile.

It doesn’t have to be complicated to be a great baseline.

Well done!

I was curious about your hand-frets positioning: I’m working mostly on first 5 frets and moving ahead only on bridge part.

At moment I can play at 80% bpm :weary:

I learned the song primarily from here.

And this is where I started from. The fabulous Ian Allison.

I used to be obsessed with this tune, probably because of the banging bassline :ok_hand:

That’s a great song cool groove.

Hard to choose, but my top 5 (for either wanting to learn or get back to re-learning)

  • Elastica - Connection (I don’t even know if the sweep at the beginning is real bass but I knew wanted to make cool sounds like that)
  • Duran Duran - Sooo much stuff, but mainly Rio and Planet Earth
  • Kajagoogoo - Frayo
  • Nirvana - Lounge Act
  • RHCP - Love rollercoaster

These are the first 5 tracks in my “Bass Mastery Wishlist” Spotify playlist:

Arnie Love & The Lovelettes - We Had Enough - It made me want to learn bass. But not so much to learn to play the part.

Pink Floyd - Echoes / Live at Pompeii - The bassline from 7:33 is just so badass.

The Fatback Band - Goin’ to See My Baby - One of those basslines that completely carries the whole song.

Patrice Rushen - Haven’t You Heard - This one, on the other hand, the bass player is working his a** off in the background making the whole song work.

TWRP - Strike a Pose - TWRP is absolutely awesome and Commander Meouch

is one of the main reasons for that and, IMHO, one of the best contemporary bass players out there.

In no particular order:

  • Pictures of Home - Deep Purple (that bass solo towards the end is so tasty)
  • A Quick One While He’s Away - The Who
  • Anthem - Rush
  • By the Way - RHCP
  • A Song for Jeffrey - Jethro Tull

Lounge Act has such a great dirty, growly, bass line :ear: :hearts:

Ok then.

In no particular order:

  1. Lessons - Rush
  2. Panama Cat - Acoustic Alchemy
  3. It’s up to you - Moon Sujin – Kpop (yeah I know) :slightly_smiling_face:
  4. Finding My Way - Rush
  5. Noticing Nights - Relaxing Instrumental Jazz Ensemble

I gotta say that what many others have said countless times here is that most of the music I hear regardless of genre the bass lines really stand out to me!
