I’ve been wanting a second bass. My first is a P bass that I modded into a short scale with jazz neck. I’m pretty happy with the sound, but it is very heavy. I really like the tone of dual humbuckers. I was at GC tonight and while I’ve been really wanting a Schecter Studio 4 (good sound, best feeling neck, love the neck-through-body vs bolt-on, nice and light), they’re expensive. I was playing a couple Stingrays, and the growling tone of the SUB Ray4HH was phenomenal. Easily my fave sounding so far. The neck doesn’t feel quite as nice as the Schecters and Ibanez SR. Definitely heavier than Schecter and Ibanez. Also not really digging the output cable on the front face. My current one has that and a 90 degree cable is always getting in the knobs, and straight is snagging on the desk or creating a trip hazard in its stand. I’ve also been thinking about getting a 5 string as there’s some songs I’d like to play and I don’t really like messing with the tuning. I’m just not sure if it’ll throw off my learning of if I go that route. I’m not even sure what I’m asking, just trying to talk it through I guess.
Not the biggest Schecter fan, but I really like the new Stargazer.
However, I was really surprised when I tried the Stiletto at Guitar Center. I went there to try a Peavey Max amp and just grabbed the Schecter because it was sitting in a floor stand right there.
Played it for a good ten and was ready to take it to the front counter when I remembered I was there to buy an amp. ![]()
I have two schecters. Studio 5 and a stealth 4, love them both, the necks are awesome. A lot of tone capabilities as well. IMO they are highly underrated and passed over.
If you loop the cable through your strap then it shouldn’t interfere with the knobs at all
5 strings seem attractive but have an entirely different feel. That little bit on string spacing makes a huge difference. I would advise a second bass in BEAD tuning - if your playing 5 strings the G string won’t be in that much use, and you only lose 5 notes in the top register.

That’s basically me. I figured it was some high-end brand that Berthoud was using so basically dismissed it. Was pretty set on an Ibanez SR300 for my next one. Saw a Stiletto Stealth at my local GC a couple weeks ago and it felt and sounded great. They also have a Riot 5, a used Studio 4 and used LH Riot 5, and even though I’m not a fan of the look of the Studio 4 they have (it’s the Honey Satin with gold hardware) it plays like a dream and just feels right to hold. The thru neck is just sexy smooth into the body unlike the clunky thing I have now that leaves wear marks and pulls on my shirts. There’s also a see-thru black satin which is nice if I want to order from anywhere else, but then 3 different color options that are supposedly GC exclusives which really like them all (Ocean Blue Burst, Emerald Green Burst, and Transparent Purple Burst). The purple is the least at $889, which is still a lot for me this early on. I can get the Stealth and the Ray 4 or 5 HH for that price.
You’re not helping me make sound financial decisions, lol. GC has that purple studio 4 for $889 right now and the purple studio 5 for $979, down from $1050 and $1150, respectively.
Sounds very sound to me lol If you don’t think the 5 is for you get the 4 however if a 5 peaks your interest then….. I mean it’s only money, they will print more🤣. The purple is absolutely beautiful to me. @kamikos I lusted over the 5 for a month or so then when it went on sale I bought it. I paid 9 something for it earlier this year.
I love the sound on those Ray4HH ones. As to your issue with the front face output cable, on my Ray4 (not HH), I use a right angle cable and tuck it up under the bridge plate, then out through the strap (like a real rockstar according to Josh) and it stay out of the way. No more of a tangle or trip hazard than the side output on my Doomaha.
I‘ll take the Schecter neck through any day.
I was close to buying a Schecter Studio 4 but ended up with a Schecter C-4 Standard instead. It’s not active if you need that. But I can attest that it’s light and has the same great neck and pickups. Not shade on the Studio models, but for the money the C-4’s really give you basically an equal instrument at a fraction of the cost. Just something to consider if you really liked the Schecter neck and tone.
I hear you on the Stingray growl. They do sound very good and I love that growl, too. Run the tone knobs wide open on my Schecter and blend in some neck pickup and it’ll growl nasty, too.
Oh, and my bolt on Standard neck never moves or comes out of tune. I appreciate a neck-thru and paid extra for my Thunderbird to get one, but I can say that a bolt-on neck is not going to take anything away from the Schecter.
Both are great instruments. You can’t go wrong with either!
I agreed about being underrated. I couldn’t find much info online when I was looking at Schecter. It gave me the impression that they were likely ignored for a reason. Decided I liked that thing regardless of what the Internet thought and glad to have it. It’s my favorite and most played bass.
I just want to make it very clear that you are allowed to have as many basses as you want. If you like that Sub Ray4HH, you can have one. In fact, it’s possible that your life may not feel complete until you have one. You can spend the rest of your life playing Basskemon. Gotta collect them all.
There are very strict rules for owning multiple bass that we all have to follow, but yeah pretty much GAS it. ![]()
Well, I put an order in today for a SUB Ray5HH. Hopefully I like it as much as the 4 (aside from wider neck). I’ll find out next week when it’s in.
I will defend your right to buy this, and any other bass, by pointing out the your bassic human rights to anyone who gets between you and your bassic desires.
The rule is always, 1 more.
Basses needed is B+1, where B = current number of basses.
Yeah
N+1 applies to all hobbies I think.
What’s my next bass?
That’s the question you’ll be asking forever… ![]()
> My suggestion: go for a 5-string!
(And after that, try a 24-fret one)
If you want something more specific: an HH 5-string is a great choice.
Gratz!
