Underfloor heating

Hi im lucy new here i guess this is me introducing myself so hello everyone great to be here…

I have just bought my first guitar yeay and am wondering where to store it. My room has underfloor heating which i have heard is not good for guitars… I have bought a hard case for my guitar and was wondering if that is adequate protection for it on the floor. If i leave it outside my room its really cold and i thought that might be worse… The heating is on a lot as its winter in the uk and very cold… I will only be in this house maybe another month before i move so do you think it will be ok till then.

Thanks for any help.

First of all, welcome to the Forums, @locket . . .

I’ve never had any experience with underfloor heating, but if you’re storing your guitar in a case, it should be alright (especially for the short time you have left in that house). If the floor really feels warm, you could always lay your guitar on a chair.

I’m sure others will chime in with their suggestions.

Cheers, Joe

Welcome to the community @locket. You could hang it on the wall. That way you don’t have to mess with the case every time you want to play it.

I am curious where you heard floor heating was bad for guitars?

Putting the guitar out in your room on a stand should be fine.

I’m no specialist, but it makes sense it can influence the wood of the guitar with prolonged exposure, no? In a way like having a radiator behind the guitar.

And gosh… i’d kill for floor heating :stuck_out_tongue:

I mean as opposed to any other heater. Floor heaters are great, and it’s not like the floor is hot - just warm.

I think a heating aircon which is also drying the room out would be way worse for guitars.

I just typed it in google and the first thing that came up was how bad it is for guitars but if underfloor heating is bad summer must be bad too… Iv never had any trouble with other guitars in the heat but that is uk summers.

Welcome @locket (Lucy) . I see you have already received lots of answers to your underfloor heating question. I grew up in VERY cold Chicago, and have never heard of underfloor heating? My first house had “Counterflow” forced air heating, which meant all the ducts were under the floor instead of above the ceiling. Is that what you have? If so, just keep it away from the register (where the heat comes out). Is the entire floor heated? I’ve never heard of that.
Anyway, I agree with keeping it on a chair or sofa away from the floor until you move.

P.S. Here’s my Lucy

Haha cute…

Ye there are pipes under the floor… Its nice but im not sure how nice on the guitars… Im not sure which is worse the hot or the cold those are my option.

Might have to be a chair.

Thanks

Again, i’m no specialist. Every wooden instrument “suffers” with the seasons. I think the only thing you have to worry about is if there are abrupt changes in temperature, specially if the amplitude is very acute. Other than that, the instrument adapts.

I think what your referring to is called radiant heating here in the U.S… It should be better than a furnace duct blowing air across your bass. I am installing a hydronic system currently but it uses radiators instead of pipes in the floor. You will probably get to liking it about the time you move out. Welcome to the best bass course in the free world(sorry Neil).
