Dragonaut is a great choice.
I’m surprised how many people are totally unaware of it.
Same goes for this one.
Best outro of all time!
Same, that said mine also listens to the Grateful Dead and she’s currently learning Althea on piano so we can jam together.
I don’t think I’ll ever be able to play those 16th note octaves. And that’s put me off of really trying to learn the song. Which I realize, isn’t a good trait, but I guess that I have to own it. Hope you’re doing well with it…
I can get through a very little bit of it, then my hands just start openly laughing at me, hahahaha.
Nice! My youngest plays guitar and piano, and recently bought a mandolin. Hoping we can do Ripple together!
I found a pretty big YouTube channel loaded with reggae songs with bass tabs. So for the past two weeks I’ve been playing Bob Marley. It’s tricky enough to be fun but simple enough to learn in a few hours. Zion Train, War, Pimper’s Paradise to name a few.
I’ve also been working on It’s My Life by Talk Talk. It’s proving to be very difficult. But also very rewarding!
I like both styles of music well enough but I typically choose to listen to heavier stuff. So this was a fun surprise!
That’s awesome, I think there are certain genres of music that bassist should spend some time with and reggae is one of them. You have to learn the “1 drop” its equally as important as learning the “1” in funk.
Honestly, I really can’t think of a better use of a rhododendron bush than using it as a backdrop to play a cover of one of your daughter’s favorite artists. The cats and foxes will just have to wait in line! The neighbors can gawk! Important things are afoot! ![]()
Loved the cover of “Clara Bow.” I really only knew “Shake it Off” and “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” until this thread so I’m starting to have a much better understanding of Swift’s appeal.
Oh that’s wild! Is that a play on the “These Boots are Made for Walkin” bassline?
If nothing else it would be a great lesson in counting and or feel. And it’s fun. I feel like I’m making progress.
Awesome cover! It sounds beautiful with just vocals and bass. And the rhododendron looks beautiful, so great choice!
I think that, like a lot of prolific artists, there is a bell curve of quality. She produces some excellent material, but equally, I find some songs a bit ‘meh’. Of course, how we react to music / art is very personal, one person’s view won’t be the same as another.
More broadly, having a young daughter has certainly open me up to a lot more contemporary music. Some stuff she plays is really good, other songs are not so…again, personal opinion. What is interesting is that at school, she is in an organised ‘rock band’. The teacher seems to select material from the 60s through 80s, for example, they’ve learn The Beatles, Come Toghter; Fleetwood Mac, Everywhere; The Cranberries, Zombie, and are currently working in G’n’R’s Sweet Child of Mine!
Thanks, @andrea-sld! The rhododendrons are all along the side of our garden. They will be in flower again soon!!
That’s awesome! What instrument(s) does she play? She might be soon jamming or singing with you!
She plays piano. We’ve actually jammed Zombie, and we’ve also had a play with Billy Eylish’s Bad Guy … that’s a cool song!
So cool! Maybe some day you can play Taylor Swift together, I imagine she would enjoy that. Having a musician as a parent means she will probably keep playing and some day in the future you might even gig together.
Have you seen on YouTube a family band called The Hawkbirds? It is a mom, dad and daughter band. Their oldest video is from 5 years ago. Now the daughter is a teenager, plays the bass and sings. I love watching their videos. Looks like they have fun together.
Much envy! SO different from my ultra-strict northern European conservative Lutheran upbringing.
One thing to point out is how functional a Rumble 40 is, even with punk genre songs.
@sunDOG and @fishmongerjoe This has turned into a regular warmup as well practice noodling with walkups and octaves. Much appreciated for the recommendation again!
Gouge away by Pixies is fun!
That whole album has a ton of fun basslines on it. Here Comes Your Man is another that anyone here should be able to do once you’ve finished the course, maybe even before.
