Upgrade Day! Anyone Else Upgrading?

Cause:

a) Orange is the Dutch national colour of victory
b) We are posh snobs at heart (at least I am, so I used the Orange drop too).

Otherwise it makes no difference … I tested at least 5 different versions

You shouldn’t, they will sound identical.

Don’t forget to use authentic vintage cloth wire to get that old school tone you’re chasing.

And to answer the obvious followup question of “Well, why do people buy these things then?” - tradition

I wish I were making that up but it really is why. At the tiny voltages and currents in guitars, though, the huge orange drop caps are not necessary and will not sound any different.

I have bought them myself but there is no reason to.

Both good reasons for the extra money.

Hahahaha!
Yeah - because of my innate curioussity, I purchased all suitable capacitor types that Thomann offered and made a little solderless “system” to test those, much like the EMG system.

I knew that it would be no difference, especially with similar values … but I saw those reviews like: “since I installed a Orange Drop I play better than Jaco and get laid twice per gig”
I played just as bad with the Orange cap and couldn’t test the gig thing cause my girlfriend wouldn’t let me :frowning:

@JerryP I’m wondering if changing the electronics would make even the squier pups sound good/better. I bought one of those squier sonic p basses at a Black Friday sale and played it a while with the original pups. It would have been fine. They were a little hot, but sound good. Fender has some sonic p basses on sale right now. I just bought some soldering gear and I need some practice. Thinking I may get one and just change out the pots and see what happens. I guess the real question is green or yellow?

Because 17 bucks is nothing and the nagging curiosity you’d experience by not getting the Orange Drop cap isn’t worth the aggravation.

Fuck it. Live a little. :joy:

Exactly!

Maybe @JerryP can make a little window in the pickguard and install some LED’s so you can see the Orange cap while playing??!

It would be like Greased Lightning!

Clearly nothing to do with tone, but I always use cloth pushback wiring when redoing guitar electronics. I’m just lazy and like not having to strip the ends, lol.

Until you go with one from the magical stash of previously undiscovered Russian Paper-in-Oil caps… that’s where the real tone magic lives.

I thought that was the “Folger in your cup” :joy:

That would be a Fender Precision.

Yup. Don’t waste your time unless you want to practice soldering. I’ve done this a lot for no tonal value (but I do like fiddling).

Because you are only buying 1 and coffee shops could get you for more.

Just for the record, I went with the ceramics. A package of four for $2.99. I’m ready for the next three basses.

You can always paint them orange!

the Fralin is way more rich and complex, more lively, much higher quality than the Squier.

I have the same Fralin on Greenie and I realised recently that this pickup has a subtle bump in the high mids, certainly to add a bit of clarity. It’s like you add a pinch of JB-flavoured salt in your PB pickup.

I have had a guitar and a fuzz with a varitone rotary switch and I can can hear it there but in the 5 minutes it takes to take it apart to install the new cap and reassemble and tune, my brain can’t hear the difference. Maybe we should make a varitone in a box that we can clip into the pot and try them all before deciding? Could be a fun video experiment.

At least you’ll have spares you can swap out.
