Yea my iron is garbage. I’m moving to a a ground ground bus idea for the final design. That way there will be 1 wire on each pot. This also makes future mods easier because I won’t have 2 or 3 on a connection.
As far as the pickup goes if have to move it all the way up the neck to get better alignment. I’m ok with good enough for now.
This is cool. I think I’ll give it a shot as is and if I don’t love it I’ll save the pick guard cutting to the very end and move it up neck if need be.
Yea chisel tips are where it’s at. Not sure how I got a pencil tip back on mine. I stopped building pedals so I never came back around to getting a better iron.
Here are some pics. It is an alder body, 1 1/2" thick. The controls are rear mounted, It will be passive, but there is more than enough room to add a preamp. For the pickup, I originally was going with a TV Jones Thunderblade, with a black p90 style cover. The neck is maple with a rosewood fretboard, 32" scale.
The body shape was just like a Mustang in the beginning. I had sprayed it in white primer, but at some point, something had got onto the finish. I sanded it down, but after looking at it, I decided to deepen the cutaways. It’s funny, the waist looks smaller than on a stock Mustang, but it’s the same, the longer horns make it look so.
I was given a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder Mustang pickup, I decided to use it instead of the TV Jones pickup, I’ll keep the same route. Now I’ve decided to add the TV Jones pickup in the bridge position.
This is how far I have gotten with it. For the finish, I’m going with metalflake, Lifesaver Green with white competition stripes.
I have other work that comes first, I hope to get back to this one soon.
I restrung my new LTD, used a pack of DaDario .50-120. I tuned it to drop A, didn’t really like the 120 string, so I swapped in a 130. I still have to go back and file the nut and reset it up.
The preamp in this Samick is very bright and reads percussive playing well but it’s tough to make it subtle. I felt like a set of tape wound strings would complement it well. We’ll see what happens!
Just installed a set of these in XL (Extra Long) on my fretless fiver…. LOVE the tones I’m getting from them… Great strings - a bit costly, but well worth it IMO…. Have D’Addario’s Nylons on a couple of my 4 string bass’s and happy with them also. They seem to be a bit less expensive then the LaBella’s, but they have a large wrapped section where the nylon wrap meets the core and results in a large bulge that doesn’t fit through the through body hole of my Lakland so have to either use the more costly LaBella’s, or drill/ream the holes in my bass….
Swapping strings on the 60s vibe to see if adding more coils on the tuner fixes my ‘nut buzz’
While I’m at it I’m doing some fret maintenance and shielding it for gits and shiggles
I’m going to see if I can use the old strings on the Ibanez tmb100 since the strings are new and I’m trying to sell that one. I’ll probably shine up the frets on that one too. Cause it’s not like I have a rehearsal tomorrow or anything
Ugh. I still cut the A string too short lol. Probably needs a new nut. At least the 50-105 strings are a little thicker than what was on there. It sounds a lot better too but still rocking a piece of felt in the nut slot
I bought this BTB that had already been upgraded with Nordstrand Big Splits for a great price, so I didn’t feel bad about splurging a little on it.
The previous owner that installed the pickups also pulled out the EQ, removing the pots and knobs and plugging the holes they left behind. So I installed a Darkglass Tone Capsule. It was so incredibly easy to install, but probably because I left it wired as two volumes. In a future project I’ll rewire it as volume/blend and also wire in a bypass switch.
Today the black chrome knobs arrived and they match the originals well enough. I wanted the same smaller knobs that Ibanez installs here stock, but couldn’t find any. So settled for these, and I’m not unhappy with them.
Also installed a fresh set of nickel DR DragonSkin+ strings. I had bought a set of Elixirs for it, without thinking to check if they would fit the 35" scale. The taper on the B was just shy of the nut, so I’ll use those elsewhere. I knew the DRs would fit, and I was happy with the Hi-Beams when I was playing them, so I figured why not? I really really like these strings. Just the right tension and feel. Can’t tell that there’s a coating whatsoever.
Very cool. I looked at those when I was thinking about switching out knobs on my V8. I chose not to.
Marcus Miller intentionally spec’ed the plastic knobs on Sire Jazz models as they were authentic to the beloved Jazz of his youth.
He said in an interview that a few of his pro buds told him they didn’t care for the plastic knobs on Sire Jazz basses. He simply replied “Change them, then.”
