In Module 5, Lesson 4 the bass line has us plucking the E string with the index and crossing to the D string with the middle. Then alternating I and M on the D string. Is there any reason not to make that first E string pluck with the thumb on the plucking hand?

As far as learning and doing lessons, the way Josh teaches it is proper and it’s good to practice proper technique when you’re new to the instrument. In practical terms, however it gets played is how it gets played as long as it sounds right.

Big +1 to @faydout ‘s answer.
Try it with the standard technique. The more you can trust your fingers to do whatever you tell them, the better.
And then, yes. In the real world, do whatever you want.
But it’s nice to have the practice time to try and develop alternating technique so you’ll never have to consciously think about it, it’ll just happen.
