For my son’s drum lesson this week, he was given the task of listening to some 12 bar blues songs. It’s easy to find stuff up through the 90s so he’s got the lesson covered but he’s a bit detached because it’s “old” (he’s 13). I’m trying to show him that it’s still at least somewhat relevant in non-blues songs. I’m having trouble finding songs from the 2010s to now that he’d identify with that and isn’t bluegrass/americana/country. Like more pop type stuff. My ear is pretty bad for that kinda thing, especially the more it’s hidden. Anything you guys can think of?

Don’t know if it would appeal to a 13 y/o boy but Kiss the Girl from the Little Mermaid is 12 bar blues and has a cool bassline.
And Make Me Feel by Janelle Monae is a great Prince-inspired modern rnb song with a blues structure:

Oh yeah, Beyonce’s Texas Hold ‘Em is another great example, although it’s obviously evoking an older style.
Here’s another current blues performer to check out: Joanne Shaw Taylor from the UK. She can rip a Tele!
Here’s her YouTube channel with a lot of modern blues songs. Sub’d it myself. ![]()
