So this is something I don’t think I’ve seen discussed. I used to have my amp volume at about 1/4 and would adjust volume on the bass but that would only 1/4 on the knob. Lately I’ve changed it so bass knob is max, amp is set to be pretty loud, then I adjust on the bass to be about 3/4.
Same applies to pedals. On my compressor I’ve got the level set to 1/2, should it be maxed?
I generally have the volume knob(s) on my bass full open and then get to a good room level via the amp. To me that’s easier to replicate than going “ok, volume all the way up, then turn it down 3/16ths of the way”
I like my bass at max volume, and on the pedals I try to have similar volume when pedal is on or off, except when using amp sim pedal DI into interface, then I use volume on that, otherwise I go for amp volume after setting gain
I’ve been going back-and-forth between fingerstyle and pick lately. I’ve been max volume on the bass for finger plucking, then rolling off the volume a bit (maybe 10-20%) when I play with a pick to compensate for the volume difference.
For pedals, I adjust the volume/level knob on them to be the same whether it’s on or off.
Edit: I set the bass and pedals so they all are about the same volume going into the amp no matter what, then treat the amp volume as the overall master volume, if that makes sense.
I was doing exactly this at last nights band rehearsal. If I just leave on 100% when aggressively using a pick (such as for a punk song) I can overwhelm the rest of the band. Of course, sometimes I might want to do that just for the hell of it
I’ve always left a little room to adjust volume on the bass itself. So usually I have the knob at 75-80%. If you’re at 100% you have nowhere to go but down in real time.
