Has anyone tried Weldang pickups at all? Their variable voice ones In particular seem interesting.
Looks great. Pretty cool and on par with many boutiques pickup price. I did not find where they make them. If it’s US then it’s a good deal.
I’m kind of surprised they make a P pup, but not a J in the Variable as they make quite a few for the Multi-Coil. Maybe it’s on the works.
Trying to decide if I should try one in my P Bass or maybe my Ray4 fretless. Although I’m basically already looking at a new project to build a bass. Was thinking either jazz or PJ config for that. I have a spare neck that wants to be used….
What tone are you hunting, specifically.
Don’t ask logical questions; you’ll get no answers here. ![]()
It has crossed my mind, I typed and deleted and typed again paused a few seconds before I hit the orange button, so believe me, I thought about it, ![]()

On a bit more serious note, I don’t know. One of those things where I don’t know what I don’t know, and can’t even describe what I’m looking for but still kind of searching for a tone that feels right. If that makes sense. I like the idea of being able to change the characteristics of the pickup without swapping out pickups and try to personalize it to the bass it’s in.
The only reason I’d get it is the looks. I wouldn’t want a pickup system that claims to do it all, and worse, deliver that claim ![]()
For me, for P or PJ, it will be Delano or the Xtender series, for that Ray, I’d make it HS. Adding the Candybar neck pickup on to the Stingray bring it to the next level in tonal option.

C’mon, you know you want to! I’m sure you’ve got something laying around that needs a little zhuzh. Did you watch the video of the demoing of the VVM 5 they had linked on the page?

For the Ray4 I really don’t want to install a neck pickup. I have the Ray5HH for that. Current wiring doesn’t give me HS, but I can do HH, SS-inner, SS-outer, H-bridge, or H-neck. Probably going to put in some switches for parallel/series. Maybe even have the ability to do a single neck with H bridge. If I do a dedicated HS configuration it’ll be in a different as yet to buy/build instrument.
For your Ray4 you can just put the MMTW from EMG and add the VMC if you must have the 3rd knob but I’d just plug that empty slot and call it a day. It will provide more than enough tonal coverage for Fretless.
Check it out. It’s on the mix there. That’s the Ray4 body with full width OLP neck.
Don’t forget to account for the overtone that you’ll lose in the mix. Very little of that deliciousness will come through once the lower mid frequency and lower treble of guitars and vocal as well as drums share the piece of frequency spectrum. That’s why it’s on the demo page like that. You are the only person who could hear and appreciate the subtlety when practicing but everyone else hear the bulk of the tone.
