I have not yet figured out what all four knobs on my schecter c-4 do because when I turn two of them I don’t hear it.
I figure this is an experience thing, but I’ve spun two of the knobs all the way forward/back and plugged into my low end fender bass buzz 25 amp I don’t hear a thing, other than one of them makes my E string stop buzzing (unless I put my finger on it) when it’s turned all the way one direction.
I can’t find a manual and there is no writing on the front of the bass (I got it right before starting this course) and while the spec sheet on their page says “Bridge Volume/ Neck Volume/ Bridge Tone/ Neck Tone” I’m guessing their tone but I have no idea what tone does because I can’t hear it when I spin them.
Tone knobs are a low pass filter. Turning them all the way one way should deaden higher pitches a bit (but not completely). Try seeing if you can hear more of a difference to the tone of your G string.
Depending on the instrument and strings they can be pretty subtle.
Well turn one volume down and turn one tone all the way left pop the string like slap and pop. Then do the same after turn the knob all the way right. When it’s all the way right you should hear a snappy tone and all the way left is much warmer and darker tone.
Current Schecter C-4 basses (Standard, Deluxe, and Plus) all use the same active layout, with a four-knob “diamond” arrangement:
Volume – master volume, active
Blend/Pan – blends bridge and neck pickup output
Bass – 2-band EQ, cuts/boosts low end
Treble – 2-band EQ, cuts/boosts high end
Both EQ knobs have a center detent so you can feel the flat/neutral position by touch, with boost clockwise and cut counterclockwise. On some C-4s the layout is arranged with the two volume/blend knobs closest to the pickups and the two EQ knobs further down, though this varies slightly by year/finish. One wrinkle: older C-4s (mid-2000s “Diamond Series”) sometimes shipped with a Vol/Vol/Bass/Treble layout instead of Vol/Blend/Bass/Treble — two separate pickup volumes rather than a blend pot — so if yours doesn’t respond to blending as expected, it may be one of those older units. Worth checking with a multimeter or popping the cavity cover if you want to confirm which wiring scheme yours has.
