What amp should I buy as a beginner?

Hi, I haven’t used the 15 sorry.
I play with others with the 25 and it is fine, I want a bigger amp tho as
I want more air to move

Do you really find you can play with a drummer who has a full kit with a 100? I’ve heard mixed things about that, but I’ve not played with others yet. Not quite ready for prime time, although I’m in module 15 and I keep threatening my friends to unleash my low end power any day now. I thought the 100 would be ok to jam with guitar and a snare or something mellow like that but not a kick drum.

I have played outside with a drummer and two loud guitars or one on keyboard and only get to about “2” or “3” on the volume, with the 25.

Yeah I’ve played with a drummer no problem on the 100. And yeah it was a full kit. I think the highest I’ve ever turned the volume is halfway. Now if you have guitar players who wanna turn their amps up all the way, maybe it couldn’t hang, but I’ve never had to deal with that, so I don’t know.

Also, drummers can control their dynamics just like any other instrument. So unless you’re playing metal or your drummer thinks he’s in drum corps, I don’t think you’d have too much trouble with the 100. But my experience is limited, so maybe others on here who’ve played out more on the amp might have more to say.

EDIT: Another thing to consider of course is tone. A Rumble 40 isn’t going to sound like a 100. So you may end up going a little bigger to get the sound you want. Definitely buy before you pay, even if you don’t do those 2 things at the same place.

Thank you @GingerBug and @Gloucestre I was worried that I maybe should have bought a 200, but then again, I am mostly in a metal scene in terms of shows I go to, but the friends I would be jamming with are just normies. Sounds like I’ll be ok with a 100, whew.

Edit: To elaborate a bit on what I said in my original comment, my Rumble 15 has persistent cycling hum, like built in feedback. I have 2 bass, a Squier PJ and an Epiphone Goth T-bird. The Squier never sounded much different on the P or the J pickups, nor did the tone knob do much. I kinda figured I just got a bad Squier even though I had it set up by a great local luthier. I kind of got the tone the people tolerate T-birds for on the 15 (I don’t have a problem playing mine and I’m not 6’7", I think the hate for T-birds is bass internet cultural rather than because they are SO hard to play, but that’s another post) but not really, and again, no subtleties going from pickup to pickup or with tone.

All of this really bothered me and I thought I was doing something wrong and wasn’t getting better because my basses didn’t sound like everyone said these basses should. What was I doing wrong? I must be just misfretting a year in. Or did I just buy totally shitty basses and waste money? Either way at a certain point it got really discouraging. Buying the Rumble 100 was a revelation. All the pickups on all my basses work as advertised, and sound as they are supposed to. Tone knobs effect tone! If I want to sound fuzzy, I turn on the overdrive, it’s not the default! I think this might be missing in the discourse around beginner amps, sounding bad in tone, not because I play like a novice and have a ton to learn, made me less likely to want to play.

Tl;Dr, Rumble 15 sucks and I spent 18 months with one as my only amp, using a Squier PJ and Epiphone T-bird.

Ah, hah. I get that hum as well and was wondering why. Now I know. Sounds like I need an upgrade. Thanks, all…the feedback here is awesome.

Is that feedback pun intended?

How good are the compressors on the Katana. That does seem like a very attractive package, especially with the bluetooth and peal board.

I have a few bass amps for different needs, a Boss Cube is a great practice amp especially when you add the BT dongle. Being battery powered as well means it is easily moved between rooms at home.

I use a Rumble 40 for a monthly pub gig, open mic, where I play bass for acoustic musians who turn up. Plenty loud enough, great sound and very light. In fairness to the rumble it can take a bit of a kicking as well as the stage is quite small. For studio work with my jamming band you need much more, use a 600 watt Warwick head set at 350 watts through an Orange cabinet, i turn up to about 7 to match drums and guitars.

I did have a Katana 210 , totaly superb but too heavy to lift upstairs etc, so sold it, the 110 would make a very good choice, but maybe if your only playing at home that cube will definately get the job done and not be in the way.

First thing first.
The Bluetooth dongle is $40
The GA-FC is $130 and the new EX is $150.
No one is selling BT used but plenty of GA-FC deal.

I’m still diving deeper into the GA-FC features but so far it’s not the same as the guitar app and features.

As for the compressor it’s based on Bass Comp BC-1x I believe there are others as well. Boss gives you quite a few choices on each effect.

As I mentioned earlier, unless you are streaming baseless tracks and play along it’s better to separate the audio sources because it just get so muddy on the low end.

It’s a great sounding amp short practice session you can’t tell the difference between katana and genzler anything over 45 minutes it seems that the genzler is more ear pleasing.

Thanks Al! I browsed around all the Katana manuals and I’m moderately impressed that it seems like a neat solution if you’re wanting a simple rig that doesn’t involve a bird’s nest of pedals and cables! Prices over here seem to be pretty comparable. I’m reasonably happy with my Ampeg 110 and Zoom B3en currently, but worth keeping an eye out for any second hand deals looking forward.

I’m currently near London for another month so I might try and track down a shop with one that I could go play with and have a listen to.

It is that for sure, especially if you plan to use pedals. I’m not a pedal guy but even that I use at least 4 patches
Clean
Reberb/ delay for Fretless
Octave gotta have some for Mr Tony Levin
Wah Wah just fun fun pedal.

With this I can just show up with the switch a BT dongle to one of my gig which has the 110 and 210 slap on the BT and sync with my app and it’s like home setup.

I know for guitars it’s just super super useful.

See what’s available in your price range. Just don’t let the grass grow under your feet. I scored a very gently used Fender SBX-15 cabinet and I mated it with a Joyo Bad Ass Bantamp Bass amp all at reasonable prices. Be flexible and keep your eyes open. Deals are there but you have to be able to hustle.

A big amp with a minimum 12 inch speaker, 15 inch is better.
Then get rid of your night table and put the amp where the table was then put a towel over the top and this is your new night table.
Now if you have a sofa get at least one more amp of similar size and this becomes your end table(s), be sure to put a cover over the top.
Then get a Boss Katana for around $300. and put the Katana next to your bass.

I prefer the amp instead of an end table, just like I prefer a bass hanging on the wall instead of a picture.

Tony Levin one of my favorites…
I’ve seen Tony 4 times, twice with King Crimson, once with the Yes boys without Chris so the tour was called - Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe, the bass player was never advertised. We figured the bass player would be an unknown prodigy or Tony… It was a world class event, epic.
I’ve added Big Time, Steam and Shaking the tree to Songsterr a few weeks ago.
What Tony are you playing lately or digging on?

Didn’t I make the shaking the tree tab for you?

I’m thinking about “Belle” right now I finished the sheet and tab some times last year but never got around to playing it yet. It’s harder to do a cover on that song I realized as there’s no drums and bass and piano and others don’t really come in at the same time, anyways it’s not as easy as I though it would be.

The tab was built through Songsterr and seem accurate.
I don’t know “Belle”,
How about tabbing the 15 second 13 year old crushin it?

Best choice for sure! I bought a generical cheapo 30 watts that buzzed right out of the box… so I ended buying the fender anyways…

I love a wall of amp, but I hate that I have to rebuild the shed if I crank it. It will break,

Personal preference is the key for sure but 12" is probably the max I’d go especially for home. I like the tight punchy 10" especially the Array with the tweeter running through the middle. 15" is definitely not my style. That’s like driving with a 6 liter Hemi, ferocious !!

Nice gear…

I have a Fender M80 with a 15 inch and a Yorkville 100 15 inch, mostly used as end tables, sometimes just for fun Ill pound out something as I have no noise issue problems, or if another bass player comes by.
Otherwise I use a Kustom 35 for practice.
I may get a Boss Katana, incredible sound, small, super loud, and not much money.
