Blackberry smoke is right up there with all the great southern rock bands.
Just found this live version, it goes real hard. Wouldn’t be surprised to learn that Dixie Dave has swallowed a few mics doing his career. The drummer, Travis, is a beast!
I heard one of Sade’s songs yesterday and forgot my love of much of the music and realized the one thing that drew me to the band was the bass…
Funnily enough, Sade didn’t do much for me in the 80s. Sure, her music was cool and she was good looking too. But it lacked emotion somehow.
Fast forward a 100 years: the “Lover’s Live” concert on DVD. She aged really well and is as beautiful as can be. She has lived, obviously…
But even better: her voice, her whole personality got a soul that I missed when she was younger.
My favourite video clip from that concert:
Bonus: watch and listen to the guitar player ath the end!
So, Julia Hofer (of Thomann fame) came out with a record of her own. Not sure what the style exactly is, but I kinda dig it:
That’s quite the cadenza there at the end… she almost missed the super high notes… real people, real musicians, real music
Yeah… the super high note. I always stumble over that.
I just thought for about 30 minutes about a technical solution to remove that!
For me it is the one imperfection that keeps me from marrying her ^^
I am sure that breaks her heart
Yeah! Better I don’t tell her…
@Billn - it’s magic, not horniness!
100% with ya @Whying_Dutchman ! 100% I’ve always been attracted to the deeper voice of some singers…Sade, Holly Cole and Diana Krall…don’t know what it is but I appreciate it.
Oh nice, I definitely dig it! Was she quoting Chris Isaak “Wicked Game” starting around 1:43?
Been getting into “the warning” 3 sister band that rocks hard from Mexico , check them out.
Really good
Cheers Brian
One of my favourite voices: Lisa Hannigan. Unfortunately she doesn’t find her original voice on her solo albums, but this song is great!
(Best to get the original CD or unvompressed FLAC … and good headphones for this)
Sorry… not familiar with that song or bass line
Wow! Not my sort of music but there’s no ignoring the energy on that wee stage. The guitarist seems to be at a different gig to the other two, who are rockin’ like it’s the end of days - especially the skin-beater!
I wonder how much is her change, and how much is yours. I haven’t listened to her for decades, but back in the day she did plenty for me, in terms of ‘setting a mood’ - if you know what I mean. Teenage Pete was very grateful to her.
I absolutely know what you mean - I have used it for that occasions too
Don’t get me wrong: I found the music good back then, here voice too, the mood, the production, everything…
And still I found it too cool, too perfect, too over-produced in a way. So, in this way it didn’t do much for me … it was lacking “soul”…
Of course I have changed, but that doesn’t man that I can or cannot appreciate the sound of the 80s in a smilar way now.
Just have a look at the original video:
And then rewatch the live video. See what I mean?
In the 80s video she just sings the words. In the later clip she has lived what she is singing about.
PS I had something similar with Amy Whinehouse. Didn’t get her.
And then I saw the documentary “Amy” and especially this scene:
This was the raw Amy Whinehouse that was hidden under all her over-produced songs.
Now I really love Amy Whinehouse and try to ignore all the stuff they did to her songs in the final mix.
In wish she had lived to make an unplugged album…
Yeah, I love when there’s energy on stage. I feed on that, just like they feed on the crowd’s energy. Stoner/sludge is a genre you either like or don’t.
This clip always has me in stitches when I look at the drummer. He’s so stoned, flying somewhere in a different universe than the rest. Then he wakes up at around 2:13. Keeps that pocket tight though!
