Splitting out a dry bass track and mixing it with the effected one is a pretty common technique for sure. In fact it’s one reason I always record dry and do any effects in the DAW.
My bandmate and I recorded both the bass and guitar here completely dry:
Check out how they sound dry
Anyway, mixing the dry tracks in to the effected can add body and tone, works nicely.
Just picked up Tony Levin’s new solo album (his first since 2007). I’m not usually crazy about his solo/side project work, but this is really good and a cool concept. He plays his favorite basses on different songs and (in the liner notes) talks about each bass and its significance to him and its sound. I love liner notes.
Good choice, all things Tony are great…
I’ve been on a playing Tony kick for the last couple months, lots of the Peter Gabriel days and the King Crimson era.
I will be checking this album out today and posting my favs on songster.
It’s my second favorite Hüsker Dü album; I still listen to it all the time. Love that they opened it with one of Bob’s bangers, but for me the best song on there is “The Girl Who Lives on Heaven Hill”.
For a bass cover someone should do “Terms of Psychic Warfare” though, which also reminds me to see if I can find out what is up with Greg Norton’s cancer.
