Well hello @Malyngo. I recall you from answering my own request for assistance with Thunder Kiss '65. So, I thought I would respond in kind.
Slowing things down is like wearing a gi in martial arts training - it’s a means to perfect form and technique. I’ve only been playing for 14 months, however, so I don’t have the knowledge of the many experienced players here who may offer more specific advice, but for me playing something slowly and repetitively, focusing on everything from what my fingers are doing to simply relaxing the muscles, as I gradually increase the tempo, is what works.
The problem for me is when I rush because I am impatient and want to get it already. I want to play the song at speed - right now. I don’t want to play this one part over, and over, and over again. With that mindset going slow feels neither helpful or effective. It seemingly doesn’t give me the immediate results I desire. Well, recognizing that thought process now I have to slow my mind down as well.
Why am I impatient? Why does it frustrate me? I’m not playing a gig. I’m not in competition with anyone. Which brings me back to the gi example. Have patience, perfect my form and technique – for however long that takes for me – enjoying the process as I go, and then have faith that I will achieve my goals.
And when I get it what a feeling it is.
The journey is what brings us happiness, not the destination.
