because their marketing department is shady AF. I hate that they call it “official” when that’s a bald-faced lie. Official implies it’s from the damned band, they say it’s their staff of professional musicians. But they also have “pro” level tabs but those are just for Guitar Pro software you can download those to load into Guitar Pro or other programs that can read GP files.
The tabs for Official level used to be able to be dug out of the website and they’re also just Guitar Pro files, but it’s a game of cat and mouse of people figuring out how to download those and UG changing the website so people can’t.
They couldn’t even get a Paramore song right, and the bass fills were clearly audible when listening to the song. But their notation just has it chugging right along…
Clearly there are slides in Winding Road and they not only ignore them they ignore the notes at the end of the slide altogether. Cancelling my subscription to it asap.
Mine is for a year but I got it pretty cheap, at least Their “pro” tab of Paramore’s Decode, the f’ing intro which is also CLEARLY AUDIBLE is wrong. It’s like twice as long even o.O
I exported it to MIDI and threw it into my DAW, and used loopback to record the actual song lol… so wrong…
So almost all the free tabs available on Ultimate Guitar are just made by volunteers, with wildly varying quality. The subscription gives you access to the “Official” tabs, but “official” just means they were made by Ultimate Guitar staff rather than some random person on the internet. And the staff doing these “official” tabs are probably guitar players, not bass players.
The official tabs are not consistently reliable — often they suggest fingering that I don’t think is the most comfortable, or use different fingering for the exact same pattern and notes in different points in the song. BUT all that said, they are still miles ahead of what I find elsewhere. Not perfect, but combined with other resources and my ears, still very helpful.
It’s also true that I am less focused on reproducing exactly what is on the recording and more on being able to play the song with other musicians in a jam or cover band situation. So UG is fine for that. YMMV.
I’m working on a song, Zitti e Buoni by Maneskin. The UG official tab was way off, the Songsterr seems off to my ear but is close and got me in the neighborhood to jam.
For a while I’ve been struggling with really superficial, dumb stuff. Which bass would look better for a given jam, which bass brand would get the most acceptance, if I’m going to get judged for the bass I play, etc., etc. All of this has come at the expense of actually learning and playing the bass.
I need to stop wasting time and energy on things like that, and focus on actually playing.
Thanks to those of you who pointed that out in some of the more… inane threads and posts I’ve made lately.
My problem is buying shit. I cannot stop. I buy a bass, then a strap to complement said bass, then strings to improve the sound, then an expensive tuner to tune up aforementioned bass as well as it’s stablemates, then a cleaning kit to keep it shiny, a fret kit to polish the frets, multiple tool kits to keep them adjusted, then a rack to hold them all nice and neat, then an effects processor to give me different sounds, then another bass that I just have to have. Currently there is a Gibson EB4 calling my name. I almost made an offer on it yesterday but I think my wife would say, “You only play one at a time”. I am so obsessed with equipment that I think my practice time is suffering. I have also been afflicted with MBS. I change basses from song to song sometimes, which hinders my time to practice. It really is a disease. I have always been just a touch OCD, but playing bass has kicked it into overdrive. I think I need help…wait, I know what would solve my problem…the Gibson EB4. And BTW, I cannot sell any of the stuff I have. It is mine, mine, mine, all mine and it ain’t going nowhere!
Fret buzz. My struggle is fret buzz. Since I put the he TIs on my FGN, I get buzz on the open A string. None of the others, and nothing when I fret a note. Just on the open A
I’ve tried raising the saddle, and adjusting the truss, nothing works. At a loss
On my Player Jazz when I had it, I experienced this issue. I had cut the string too short, so it didn’t have enough windings on the post to provide for enough angle behind the nut. I put a new string on with some more length, so there were more windings on the post, and that fixed it up.
Are you sure it’s fret buzz and not just buzz?
Fender A srings are notorious for this, and those TI low tension strings might make it worse.
Make sure your string is wound WAY DOWN on the spindle of the tuning machine. Too high and you will buzz for days open (and even some fretted notes).
Others put a fret wrap up there.
Fender even makes an add on string retainer but it only works with certain tuning machines IIRC. I think they call it a stealth retainer.
I have some basses that I have to give a little press down on the spindle every now and again…It’s a design flaw (ahem…I mean feature) that they seem to not want to correct
It could just be buzz. When I press down on the A string it goes away. I thought I left a good amount of string to wrap around the tuner. Next time I won’t turn it, or trim very little. There’s 3 or 4 full windings on the tuner. I thought it looked neat.
I have a fret wrap I’ll try when I get home. At the doc now getting tested
