Oh I’m well aware of what his needs are. Every week I get to listen to how he worked so hard to become a rock star and never quite made it. And after we get done with that, we discuss the tragic death of Karen Carpenter. Every week. I don’t like to brag but I’m pretty much an expert now on the life and times of Karen Carpenter. Can’t play the bass line for Seven Nation Army but I do know that Karen Carpenter and Olivia Newton-John were BFF’s and that Olivia had asked Karen to be her drummer on her next tour. Wait, there’s more …
I’m definitely doing the B2B course but I wanted some feedback on my technique. It would appear I have none.
I find the best teachers (any subject) are people who want to teach, and not have to teach.
Yikes
That describes just about every “bass teacher” on Craigslist!
Oh, sweet Jeebus, help me.
April, please, for the love of everything holy, lose this mook. Lose him yesterday.
If there’s no one else near you that is an actual bass teacher, be patient and just go through B2B without judgment or expectation. Just faithfully and carefully try to do what Joss says in each lesson. You might not know for certain if your technique is perfect, but you will build technique and your knowledge of the instrument. The rest is practice and playing songs that you like.
Many, if not most, B2B students start the course over again once they’ve finished it. Why? Because, like you, they didn’t know anything back when they started it. But, afterwards, it’s a whole new world, because now there’s a basis, a foundation of knowledge and experience that allows them to see, hear, and understand more clearly what Josh is teaching, in a new light.
Stick with people who know how to teach. It takes a lot more than somebody just wanting to teach bass: It takes knowing how to teach well. Even many pro bass players make lousy teachers because they know how to play the hell out of their instruments, but pedagogy is a whole other discipline that takes study and dedication to learn. Kinda like learning bass.
But @MikeC, were you aware that John Lennon once told Karen that she had the most beautiful voice in the entire world? My fretting improved substantially once I became aware of this.
Well, hell. My fretting improved exponentially just from reading this.
Please give me your teacher’s Venmo account number so I can send him 100 bucks immediately!
Doesn’t Josh book zoom lessons? If there’s no one else in your area you’ve got zoom as an option.
B2B is good, and if you record yourself plenty here to give you tips. This jamoke ain’t worth your time.
Did you know the Beatles made their first trip to America simply so they could meet Ronnie Spector?
There, now you’re slapping will improve
There is a third way @sakkasie. Find out a bunch of super super obscure Karen Carpenter trivia and drop it at the next meeting. Saying ‘Oh I thought everyone knew that’.
Ok. You’re gonna have to prove that one…
And then once he verifies those and is amazed, make up some total BS ones and drop them the next time. Who knew about her Death Cult? You did!
Exactly and who knew she invented the ShamWow? I was as surprised as you are.
The best part is when they start nodding along, “Oh right yeah I’ve heard that before.”
Did you know Karen Carpenter recorded a solo album but very few copies were released? My teacher HAS a copy. And his copy is even better because he went in and fixed all the mistakes. I’m not sure what those mistakes were but they’re fixed now!
Actually I was in her death cult. We would sing the lyrics to “We’ve Only Just Begun” in reverse whenever we made a sacrificial offering. True story.
And here I thought her only side gig was fighting off Richard.

Karen Carpenter Death Cult. How do you join

I think that’s the first step to joining the KC Death Cult (aka KC/DC)
Karen Carpenter lives on in the BassBuzz Forum! My work here is DONE.
