Yes! I know Billie Jean hogs all the attention around here but tbh this one was (is) still the biggest PITA in the course for me.
I really dug playing Papa and having that iconic line come to life. It’s definitely something I’d never even thought of trying before. It was one of the Easter Egg joys of B2B for me. ![]()
What is “Papa”?
![]()
Module 11 - Lesson 3 of Beginner to Badass course. is “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag”
and it’s an ass-kicker. ![]()
EDIT:
( don’t take that as something to fear or be discouraged by BTW. Everyone can do lots others can’t. I got through Billy Jean first go through, but then started snarling up at syncopation and off beat stuff. Being challenged is a good part of learning! )
I’ll get through it tho ![]()
I am sure that once I get the funky timing of getting to those fills down… I know i will enjoy playing it ![]()
When I try to do it even at slow speed, my fingers turn to spaghetti! LMAO
I’m just gonna spend some time with the full sheet tab and my metronome… which I think will help ![]()
Thanks… I forgot about that, it’s on my playlist since doing the course.
It’s been awhile since Ive played it but I played it a lot after doing the course.
Im going to have a go at it right now.
Another PAPA you may like and enjoy playing is Papa was a rolling stone, by the Temptations.
Its easier than the other Papa but its good for timing and a great song. ![]()
Honestly just finding time to practice. Life just be lifin’! By the time I get home from work I’m wiped out. Throughout the day I take time to watch your videos (daydreaming that I’m actually playing along with you with my air bass) but feel bad bc I really do wanna practice. I wanna wake up and just magically know how to play but hey lol!
I shall make time. (Sigh)
You have just described me ![]()
I went back, with my own new boots and kicked Papa’s butt ![]()
I can do it at fast now ![]()
My biggest struggle now is impatience. Lol. That and getting my chops to the point I can practice as much each day as I want to.
This is a good place to be.
#1 issue for many. When I first started learning I was up til 2-3am and was super tired the next day. The plight of the hobbyist musician is a tough one, and the more you progress, it seems like the more time you need to hone in things. Toughest part. Just keep trying to find even 15 minutes. Get that bass in your hands, it ebbs and flows, just don’t let it sail out to sea.
And remember to not put the bass away
Leave it within arms reach! LOL
( ‘out of sight, out of mind’ as the saying goes )
i’ve set my practice time as right after work and do one lesson of B2B (I just started module 3 yesterday). It’s about 10-15 minutes a day.
I obviously don’t know what else you’ve got going on, but seeing if you can set a specific time might help. If you (and anyone else in the household) knows that is your bass time, it might seem less like “one more thing to do” and more like just part of the day.
Having a set schedule is ok … but try not to turn it into a chore
Also … if you have free time, and spot the bass, and just noodle around for 10 mins… grab that thing! ![]()
Learning bass isn’t sposed to be unpleasant … keep the fun in it! ![]()
Ok, so this is a funny issue - I am playing this song: Something Good Bass Tab by Alt-J | Songsterr Tabs with Rhythm
When playing open G (G0), the only thing touching the neck is my thumb. Not a lot, really.
But the neck moves away anyway, maybe cause I’m too fat (according to my girlfriend) and my stomach is pushing the bass away?
I know I’m not on 6% bodyfat anymore, but I think it’s a technique issue, not my weight.
How can I resolve this stupid & trivial issue!
I tried to recreate this, and the only thing I can figure is that the thumb is still tense and pushing the neck (either recovering from or preparing for the other notes you have to play).
If you let the fretting hand drop from the neck entirely, does it still move?
If you’re pushing extra hard with the plucking hand, that could also move the neck.
Sounds like there’s some unwanted tension and pressure in this system somewhere.
I don’t think that bodyfat index has anything to do with it. I’ve seen too many enormous bassists play circles around me in the most laid-back, relaxed way possible, to believe it could be anything to do with stomachs.
Yes - that’s why my girlfriend might be right about me being fat ![]()
Hmmm … that might be it. Gotta try…
My gf just said that I might be fat and clumsy .-)
Brutal!!
I think you’re svelte and graceful.
Bassists gotta lift each other up.
