This is still my favorite Beatles album. Growing up, I went through four vinyl copies of it because I’d leave in on my turntable so long that it would warp (my stereo was right next to a window that caught the morning sun).
I would play it until it couldn’t physically be played any longer, then buy a new copy.
Wait a second rule breaker…
As long as someone startred the honorable mention… Prince - Purple Rain (FUNKY, and yes @kristine - Darling Nikki fo sho) The Clash - London Calling (my older step-sister was the more progressive one in the house, bringing home everything from MJ’s Thriller to the Plasmatics, including this one) Billy Joel - Turnstiles (this is just brilliant) Adam and the Ants - Prince Charming (you haven’t lived until you have heard the tale of Pablo PIcasso visiting the Planet of the Apes - this one further solidified my desire to seek out alternative music like MYWTKK and KMFDM, etc) Lords of Acid - Lust (the grand-daddy OG of the colorful world of techno raves, which I frequented a lot more than one would think…Moby’s first is a single vinyl groove behind this one)
Areosmith-Toys in the Attic (first album I bought with my own money)
Pink Floyd-The Final Cut (a masterpiece at the time)
Venom_At War with Satan (the Kings of Black Metal)
Marillion-Fugazi (bought it by mistake thinking it was a heavy metal album. It was not but was so much more…it is still played in my rotation)
Anything by Warren Zevon- He painted such wicked word pictures of places I have actually been)
I got half way to work this morning (I ride a bike down the Bridgewater canal tow path) and realised I had not included the Britpop album, Pulp - A different class; or Norah Jones’ Come away with me; or Big Country’s The crossing. All records which define important moments in my life.
Rocket to Russia - The Ramones
Zenyatta Mondata - The Police
The Soul of Nina Simone - Nina Simone
Black Album - Metallica
Jesus Christ Superstar - Original Broadway Cast
I feel bad for kids that will never know the joys of going to the store and buying that album you’ve been saving for or waiting to be released.
The cashier handing it to you and you race home to open it and devour every image and word on the jacket and sleeve while you listed to it over and over.
The pilot episode in 1984 cost $5 million to make. You can see where the money went. Plus fantastic theme song / use of the tom samples on I think a Fairlight? Magic
Crate digging is great but not something I’ve ever missed… I really enjoy the convenience of being able to pull up millions of songs on my phone any time I want. Sometimes I have an urge to buy some vinyl and I remind myself that it’s a pita
