Tina Weymouth is awesome!
One thing I love about Tina is she knows when to use (and how to play) a synthesizer for the bassline.
All Cats are Grey is good for working on getting an even tone (fingers or pick). It was the first cover that I did after B2B because of that.
My Dad got me listening to the Cure back when Pornography was their most recent album. You should take a swing at Fascination Street. It’s a banger and that bass line is a bit of work to stay on top of (but fun to play when you get it down).
Tell him his time is running out ![]()
I wish I could sing in general, but if I could sing like anyone, I’d want it to be Matt Bellamy. He has such a fantastic, versatile voice IMO
My go to fun bassline is the chorus to ‘Why don’t you get a job?’ by The Offspring. I often find myself just humming the bassline instead of singing the actual song ![]()
Why Don’t You Get A Job? - The Offspring
It’s one of my favourite songs!

Most fun? Gotta be pelican. Love me some pelican. Drought and immutable dusk come to mind, closely followed by spaceship broken, parts needed.
Most folks don’t know pelican, but give a listen-them cats can play.
Pelican the instrumental metal band?
I hope so because they are awesome
Yes. One my favorites. Also pretty hyped on karma to burn.
Got a new fretless 5 string, so playing more 5 string songs now. The fretless is not as easy to play as my fretted 5 string. I am having the most fun with both of them playing Van Halen Can’t Stop loving you, and I finally found the tabs for Phil Collins Something Happened on the Way to Heaven. Both are 5 string Bass parts.
In The House - In A Heartbeat by John Murphy. (28 Days Later)
I’m working on Heard it Through the Grapevine, which is not easy, as I mentioned in the struggling thread, because Jamerson was improvising. But it’s just such a lovely syncopated bass line. It’s a shame it’s very buried in the mix and quite hard to pick out.
@HighlandBass I ripped the audio from the video, split it into stems, reduced the volume on everything except the bass, which I boosted. You can play it from the link or download the .flac file.
Thanks but it’s cool, I’ve already done that (using moises) which helped a lot. It is a lovely line though isn’t it? I have the tab which I’ve constructed from Ultimate guitar (close but no cigar) and a couple of video online covers also close but not quite. Between them I think I’ve got a pretty close tab.
Having said that, and bearing in mind Jamerson improvised himself, once I’ve got his line down correctly I may well try and relax and mix his phrases up some anyway! Just enjoy it!
I’m actually loving playing the bass lines along to this style of music. I’ve already done Under the Boardwalk and Dock of the Bay and have my eye on others!. They all seem to have really fun bass lines. And generally not too fast for my aged fingers ![]()
I am WAY behind everyone here on my abilities. The one I like is the only one that I can play IF I really concentrate.
Sharp Dressed Man following this version as posted by Paul Del Bello.
TV Dinners is a cool one also!
I often use isolated bass lines when trying to figure something out by ear since this makes it much easier imho (I’ve only started with that, so most of the time I don’t manage to figure it out in the mix).
This one is bass and vocals only.
For me, it has to be Duran Duran’s Save a Prayer.
