What to listen to if you love Dark Side of the Moon

I read an article about 15 albums to listen to after you’ve listened to Dark Side of the Moon. It was about albums that you’ll probably like if you liked Dark Side.

There were some obvious one’s like Wish You Were Here and Moonmadness. One album I listen to off of that list that I didn’t expect to like but really liked after listening to was Lonerism by Tame Impala.

What albums have you heard that you didn’t think you’d like but ended up really getting into?

DJ Shadow - Endtroducing.

My brother sent me the CD when it came out in 1996. I thought I’d hate it. Completely changed what i listed to from there on in.

Between Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon”,… Mike Oldfield’s “Tubular Bells”,…. and the exorbitant amount of weed I was smoking when I came back stateside in early 1973, it’s a wonder I’m still “functional”!!….

Well, at least somewhat…..

Not my style, but if you like them you’d probably like Spongle.

If you’re looking for more trippy synth stuff, try Tangerine Dream.

Techno Trip Hop? Wax Taylor or Hallucinogen. Hallucinogen In Dub mixed by Ott is pretty interesting.

I use to listen to Tangerine Dream in the 80’s, along with the Blade Runner soundtrack by Vangelis.

Have you listened to the sound track from 2049? I imagine it must be pretty good too.

Number 9 on the link you posted is rather good too, especially if you like symphony.

If you don’t recognize it at first, you will at 15:30

One band to check out for large soundscapes is M83.

The scene towards the end by the pool was incredible! Glad I saw it in the theater for the sound. Well, the visual was pretty incredible too!

Must be nice watching movies in Japan because people probable keep their mouths shut.

It’s one of my favorite movies in the last 20 years.

Ignore the critics; the (edit) NEW Running Man is really well done, but yes, 2049 is the best thing in a LOOOOOONG time.

You might want to check out the Alan Parsons Project. Parsons at the age of 23 or so was the recording engineer for Dark Side of the Moon. He also worked on Abbey Road by the Beatles.

He was also an artist and producer. Turn of a Friendly Card is a good album to start with.

It depends why you liked Dark Side of the Moon. What direction you want to go in. Do you want prog rock? Soundscape collages? Great concept albums? What?

This list is… fine.

Additional thoughts:

  • Swap out 'Selling England By the Pound’ and replace it with ‘Trick of the Tale’
  • ‘In the Court of the Crimson King’ by King Crimson
  • ‘Maggot Brain’ by Funkadelic
  • ‘Hot Buttered Soul’ by Isaac Hayes
  • ‘Aja’ by Steely Dan
  • ‘Random Access Memories’ by Daft Punk
  • ‘DAMN.’ by Kendrick Lamar

Kendrick may seem like an odd choice, but DAMN. is the most daring and masterful concept album ever. Arguably as daring and challenging from a pure production standpoint as Dark Side was, even using modern equipment and techniques.

Spoiler for DAMN.

It is structured to actually be two albums in one. Mixed in such a way that after you listen to it once, it can be played in REVERSE TRACK ORDER. All the track transitions line up and work the same way. But now… it tells the story of what could have happened to Kendrick and his life if one incident had gone down differently. How his life could have unraveled and left him dead in the street instead of the greatest rapper ever.
