Whatcha Watchin'? The TV Thread

Maybe it’s a good thing that not many foreigners know that Cologne is the coolest city in Germany

That really sounds interesting. I think I’m going to give “Counterpart” a try since apart from the setting or location, I do very much appreciate a well-made story and some “mindfulness” in the sense that one can see that they paid attention to the details which really separate the good from the brilliant ones. Also, I find it somehow funny that only the filming location keeps me away from watching something…

BTW: Are you also German, @joergkutter ?

Yes, but I also have a Danish passport. And I have almost lived as many years outside of Germany as in Germany :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I just watched an episode where they (British) had white asparagus for Diner, cause it’s “Spargelzeit” - and had to think about this discussion.

Which foreigner knows about the German obsession with white asparagus???
I was impressed

But: don’t expect too much. It’s good, I like it - but it’s not as cinematic as Midnight Mass, Mr Robot or West World (first two seasons) … or the best TV series ever (in my opinion): Breaking Bad.

Still, it’s not pretentious and is 100% free of any Jazz

Is the “Spargelzeit” something specifically German?? Being German, I’ve never thought about that so far, it’s simply there during a certain time of the year, when they have lots of underpayed Polish workers come to Germany to harvest the Spargel. However, I’ve never understood this obsession with white asparagus as green asparagus tastes so much better for me.

We don’t share that obsession in Holland. Also, some US friends came over especially for Spargelzeit and enjoyed it like it was water from the fountain of youth. Don’t they have white asparagus in the US?
So it might be a specific German thing, I guess…

EDIT we do have a rookworst en boerenkool “obsession” in Holland. But I have yet to see Americans coming over to enjoy that dish

I have started watching “Midnight Mass” yesterday evening and the first thing I liked was the location (I seem to have an obsession with locations which I never noticed before :joy:). An island in the ocean (near to Oregon?) with lots of abandoned houses and people who seem to be normal and strange at the same time (only that they seem to talk too much, but let’s see how it’s going). I hope for some serious blasphemy and alcoholism in there.

For serious blasphemy you need to watch South Park or Famly Guy!
The latest episode of South Park was great for many reasons, but it also included some blasphemy

Of course I watched South Park and Family Guy! In fact, I love South Park.

What’s also great and with blasphemy is “Preacher”. Weird as hell. I loved that.

Very cool! I really liked Dominic Cooper, I adored Ruth Negga … but I loved Joseph Gilgun!

Totally. Loved the 3, they were absolutely great. And (of course) the locations, be it that “old wooden church in some dusty lonely town” thing or the “Grandma’s house in the swamp including alligators” stuff. I also really liked the colours of the series very much.

Do you know “Misfits” with Ruth Negga and Joseph Gilgun? (+ Robert Sheehan who I also like). It’s about juvenile offenders who have to do community service and discover their supernatural forces (I’m already 60 years old, but my excuse is that I was only 51 or so when I was watching it. :joy: But it’s really good.) And Joseph Gilgun is so great in it.

Of course … loved the first seasons, got weaker later on…

This brings me back to years ago, when I travelled in Bayern with my husband, and at every restaurant they suggested proudly that we would order asparagus, because it was Spargelzeit. The waiters were always so surprised and disappointed if we didn’t order from the special Spargelzeit menu. “But… are you sure??? It’s Spargelzeit!!!”

If you can find it, maybe you would enjoy watching Katla. It’s an Icelandic series (8 episodes). It is so weird and mysterious. I don’t even know how to describe it. Definitely worth a watch.

You will enjoy Midnight Mass! I found it very interesting, surprising and mysterious. I didn’t know exactly what it was about when I started watching it, and it was surprising. I think I binge watched it quite quickly. And it didn’t disappoint!

Same here - it was great not to know anything about it beforehand. The series surprised me several times … and it’s still good for one or two rewatches…

Billy Joel doc on Max is actually even more amazing than I thought it could be. What a great story and journey and lesson about humanity to boot.

Not to be that guy… but perhaps you missed the joke!?! In English, “cologne” is an umbrella term for (often less expensive) perfumes/after-shaves. Borrowed from French “eau de cologne”, which, of course, all goes back to that Swiss knife of put-on-smells that already our grandmothers relied on: 4711 - Echt Kölnisch Wasser (since 1799)
