What's the deal with effects and pedals? (Also: sound in general)

Oh it’s not a grounding

it’s a lump of metal you set next to things to condition the “ambient field”

Well, they seem to have a hefty marketing budget though

lol that is even worse. I wonder how the ambient field of my coffee machine is feeling today.

just go here

They even have reasonably priced Bass and effects

VMT came in. What an incredible pedal!

So good.

Makes my rumble 40 practice amp sound like a freaking Ampeg tube. And there are other tones you can get from it! Really can round out and fill your tone, with a little clank too

Stacks nicely with other pedals too - just to provide tone if that’s what you want, or running its distortion through other preamps.

I love Darkglass

I had to turn blend knob off on my BDI-21 and turn the presence knob and treble down and bass up, but got a real good sound using both. The distortion is decent, I just rarely use distortion. May replace compressor with OD pedal as VMT and BDI both compress!

@PamPurrs if you don’t like the Wine Cellar pedal, I just got one of these, used, for $150.

The reviews are great and the DI is well known to be very good.

My opinion, the DI is crystal clear and the tone is luscious. Big and fat and round and smooth in all the right places.

It doesn’t have that edge you find in a lot of modern bass gear like @howard talks about but it does have a ton of tubey grind if you turn the gain up.

This pedal has a huge range of sounds and I haven’t found a bad one yet.

Their is a big learning curve on this pedal and Aguilar isn’t very helpful with providing information. Thankfully, there are a lot of people on TalkBass.com that post settings and in depth information about how the knobs work in tandem with each other.

Yes, I am a pretty big fan. The Tone Hammer has far exceeded my expectations.

I love my Aguilar Pickup in my Ray4
but I did not like the Aguilar AGRO pedal. it is not that is sounded bad at all, in fact it sounded quite good, but it was advertised as a DISTORTION pedal, which it is not, it is an OVERDRIVE.
But still, I do love Aguilar sounds
I would consider that ToneHammer if I were in need of anything like it, but am not.
For the right price, I might get one, but am not really looking.
Well
I am always looking at stuff, I am just not buying stuff much.

From everything I’ve read, the gain on the Tone Hammer uses a completely different circuit than their Agro pedal.

The price was why I ended up getting it when I did. Usually they run, used, at $200. I had seen a couple of others at around $160 or so but they were always gone before I could place an order. I caught this one on the same day it was posted and it was in such great condition, I jumped on it.

Yeah, and I wouldn’t be really disappointed if the tone hammer was the same as the AGRO. My only complaint was that I order a DISTORTION pedal, expecting a DISTORTION pedal, and the AGRO clearly was not that.
It sounded great, just not what I wanted, and I already had a couple OD and FUZZ pedal, so I did not want a $200 overdrive, I mean I was not looking for ANY overdrive, but at $200, and not what it is advertised as, thats why I did not keep it.

Had it been correctly advertised as an Overdrive, and I was ordering an Overdrive pedal, then I would have been pleased with it.
I think some advertising does call it an overdrive, and I don’t know who to point fingers at, Aguilar or Amazon?
Also, there is a thin line between the two, so its not like they called it an Octave pedal and shipped and Compressor pedal.

Sweet! I almost had this one for the same price but the seller bailed out. Aguilar amps and preamps are so gooood, it’s a shame we don’t see them that often on this forum (unlike the zoom pedals or rumble amps :joy: )

Isn’t that the truth! I haven’t turned the knobs on the Tonehammer amp in so long I’ve already forgotten how they interact. I agree the sound is outstanding on these. And HUUUGE!

It’s really impressive! Trying to find a good setting for slap though…the pops are a little harsh on it!

I had that pedal. it is literally hard to make it sound bad. except for the stupid overdrive button which sounds great but makes you twice as loud for some stupid reason. it’s like they were selling it to lead guitarists.

Fun looking pedal.

I like the Classic Overdrive preset a lot.
And Source Audio makes some pretty freaking cool pedals.

Nathan Navarro can kick a tin can down an alley and make it sound like music! (lol ok, that was a Ray Hudson quote about Messi, but you get the point).

That Ultrawave pedal is so dam complicated to me I wouldn’t even know where to start. I do love their One Series pedals and how each family of sound shares access to the engines and preset.
