What's the deal with effects and pedals? (Also: sound in general)

@eric.kiser - BTW, if you add on one of these, you can tap through all 128 memory locations vs. the 6 accessible on the pedal itself (which are a pain to cycle through quite frankly). Otherwise you need a PC or other device to cycle through all the memory locations.

another word about the DemonFx D7K Ultra, after a few more hours playing with it. this thing is for sure the best distortion unit for bass I’ve ever tried. I’m really impressed.

a D7K + a Mooer Radar (cab IR) + a tuner : this would be a killer minimalistic pedalboard. or, for me, maybe a D7K + a Bass POD (bean, 1st gen) + a tuner (or a custom pedal that would activate the tuner integrated into the POD).

I could seriously consider buying a second D7K for this purpose. or maybe check the A7K which is way cheaper (about half the price of a D7K).

Yeah, I really like the B7K Ultra plugin. Super good.

the D7K is said to be more agressive than the B7K but I assume both are pretty close  I don’t know about the plugin … you know, I need good’ol’pots  but again I’m pretty sure it’s really close.

Seems you are going for the same setup as what I use. I go comp > vtu / b7k > ir cabsim.

The comp works kinda nice with the distortion pedals. Sounds great with pick too.

to be honest I’m so much in love with the LA2A model the Bass POD Pro has, I’m not sure I would like to ever try another compressor  but yeah, very similar setup.

Oh yeah LA2A is my all-time top fav! Used it all the time on my HX Stomp.

I spent a few more hours on the C4 today doing very basic learning, and learn I did!!
Not only is it a synth, but also can be a stand alone distortion, filter, wah (with my expression controller pedal I finally have a wah pedal now, who knew) and a tremelo.
I haven’t even started in on the ā€˜synthy’ end of things.

I would literally go take a week long class on this pedal if they offered it.

The video @DaveT posted is one of the best I have seen so far in explaining things.
The other thing I would say is just go online and try patches and download (you can save to your PC anything you like or think is cool. The 6 onboard ones are not even the tip of the ice berg. Just note that they are not always set up properly and may not work 100% for bass, some are set for guitar (can easily be changed though). I tried to leave my USB connected to it but got noise interference over time from my PC, so note that.

And put it just after your tuner in your chain, dry signal is best, at least until you get a grip on the thing.

I don’t care much for pedals or effects. I prefer a basic clean sound.

There’s sometimes a danger in becoming more focused on one’s gear and acquiring more gear than focusing on what and how I play.

I finished that video today (was taking tons of notes and dialing in along with him. Man I learned a ton. I now feel like I have the essence of what the C4 is all about and how it changes the incoming signal (mostly). There are several more layers deep that I still haven’t a clue (6 pole vs. 4 pole upside down pinapple cake whatever - see how good my notes were?) about how each thing manipulates the sound in the deeper levels but know understand what each bock essentially does, how to connect them, and how to build things.

Thanks again @DaveT for sharing!

Sharing a little cool demo of the Behringer Bass VDI 21 (including presets)

Just a bit of a shame he had to demo it on a Rick and I’m not sure if he is using rounds or flats.

Sharing this instructional video about the order of your bass pedals. It’s quite interesting and covers a lot of things. In the end it all depends on your personal taste of course.

It comes up a lot. It just depends on what you’re looking for. Howard is a giant fan of hooky and there’s no way you’re getting that sound without effects. If you’re in a metal or shoegaze band you’re going to need effects. I don’t think using them is necessarily a kludge to cover up for bad technique.

Honestly many of them expose bad technique more than cover it up. Want to up your muting game? Get an overdrive

Frankly, I kind of laugh at Bass Purism. The whole point here is to make sounds that fit the music you are trying to play. All that matters is the end result. It’s not a contest. Effects can help a lot, and for some sounds, are required.

I just bought my very first pedal. Do things go uphill or downhill from here?

Fun uphill. Bank balance downhill.

Welcome to the slippery slope.
