Starting to upgrade the Black Friday deal guitars I bought after a few drinks on Thanksgiving. I don’t mind the pegs on the bronco, but the sonic p bass are not the greatest. What’s you favorite and why? Also, pls comment on ease of installation. Thx!
Graphtech ratio tuners. Best tuners I’ve used.
Installation is pretty simple remove the nut then the screw.
Hipshot Ultralite USA model tuning machines are a great upgrade from OEM tuners.
Note: There are no pegs on electric string instrument headstocks. They are often called “tuners” but their actual names are either tuning machines or tuning machine heads.
Bass: Hipshot USA Ultralites or Gotoh (various), depending on balance of the instrument. I think the Gotoh tuning machines are better tuners, but the Hipshots are better when you are prioritizing reducing headstock weight.
Guitar: Gotoh Magnum Lock locking tuners.
Maybe in the US. They are commonly referred to as “pegs” in Japan
Established nomenclature of acoustic and electric guitars.
Yeah, regional difference I guess.
This is from SoundHouse, basically the Sweetwater of Japan. The highlighted line, “ベース用ペグ” means “pegs for bass” and is a direct transliteration of the english words - “beh-su pegu.”
All (or at least most) other sites use the same description, as do humans.
Just a regional cultural thing maybe? Whatever
A tuning machine head “handle” (what you turn with your fingers) is commonly listed by various manufacturers as a tuning head, grip piece, button or peg.
I can see how “peg”’could have become shorthand for an entire tuning machine, even though it is just one component part of the assembly.
Yeah I am sure that’s what happened, especially in the case of borrowed/transliterated words like in this case.
Thanks for the info! I wish I could say that I had the Japanese usage in mind, but I was just wrong in my terminology. I’ll check out those listed above.
