What's your "play me something" riff?

I ain’t there yet, but I’m shooting for Higher and Higher.

First choice would be the main riff from Iron Man by Black Sabbath :sunglasses:

Alternatively, I have a growing repertoire of Blues Classics I can rely on, like Hoochie Coochie Man, Sweet Home Chicago…

Absolutely! This riff is also my ‘test a bass / pedal’ riff - makes it look like I can actually play something

On the face of it, this one seems easy, but I keeeeeep f&£king it up!

Hell yes!! While I really was a Duran Duran fan at this time, a bit of SoM was a guilty pleasure

Oh, could I add to the list the Our Friends Electric riff? What’s interesting is that this riff is not the actual baseline for this song, but is the one that people know. It was also sampled for the Sugababes song, Freak Like Me, where it was used as the bass line.

Oh yeah that’s great; Numan in general has excellent basslines. My first cover was “Down in the Park”.

For a while…and probably still depending on how warmed up I am, it’s Good Times by Chic.

Now, for the most part, it’s probably going to be either Dean Town (the main part) or that part from Sir Duke.

I was actually thinking of doing that one. Super easy, but super cool! The only thing putting me off is the white face makeup and having to stand absolutely still while playing

I like a little “Smoke on the Water”, “What is Life?”, “Louie, Louie”, “Seven Nation Army”, and “Down on the Corner”.

Da Chicken! Fun snappy and it goes with everything, :joy:

Not to mention it’s so easy any child can play, :scream:

Woah, that kid can play. If you told me that was a young @Al1885, that would explain a lot.

Flowers by Miley Cirus. I’m a metal head at heart but I love how catchy this one is. I’m realising how learning an instrument really expands your listening.

Come Together: The Beatles

Sabotage: Beastie Boys

I’ve just realised it probably looks like I’ve only made it to the letter B in a songbook.

Yes, that one… but I need to learn the whole song which is a bit above my level for now

I don’t know that I’ve ever been asked this.

I have been asked most if I can play the Seinfeld music.
That is 100% the most requested bass thing.

Go to for showing folks bass stuff? Slappity Dappity Tappities!!

Unless they’re musicians.
Then, something with consistent rhythm and groove, with super tasty fills.
Anything from Motown, Stevie Wonder, Old School Funk.

Express Yourself (not the Madonna song) is a great one.

This is why I loved the suggestion of “Groove is in the Heart” above - '90s heavy radio play, so a lot of people know it, and yet still a Bootsy bassline.

Good choice but even after learning it, I can’t remember enough of it to play it off the top of my head :man_shrugging:
