Which P/J pickups should I sell: DiMarzio DP126 or EMG GZR

You have such an eloquent way of summarizing my morning “before coffee” thoughts, that it now all makes even more sense!
There is some madness to my method, so thank you

It’s not a completely unknown, as I do know the active P and J, and in a way also the 35TW dual coil part, as those are just 35CS - the very same PUs I had in my ESP.

Also, your very own Donald Rumsfeld once said: "we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns—the ones we don’t know we don’t know. " - and I agree. He must have been a great modder!

Last but not least, I brought Ronin to my favourite punk luthier today, explained my ideas and he was very excited about it (I quote): “don’t care!”
That’s German for: “Why not?”
More excitement cannot be expected from Germans ^^

Hahaha! I will sign it and sell those as my “signature PUs” in Germany.

I agree, honestly I’m kidding, we don’t have separate budgets, but both of us are pretty reasonable in our purchases. I don’t complain about the stuff she buys and she really doesn’t have a problem with my bass addiction. It works out pretty well. Probably going to have to buy another 5 guitar rack soon, that will probably be a real test.

Ok, decision made: the DiMarzio DP126 gotta go.
I decided scientifically: I’m selling the PU that I already removed from a bass

It’s not a statement about the quality of the DP126 (which is great). It’s a statement about my infinite laziness!

As soon as I have Ronin back, with the newly routed cavities, I will test the EMG 35TW in the bridge position and compare it to the EMG GZR bridge position.

If the EMG 35TW sounds better, the EMG GZR has got to go as well. And I will rebuild the EMG GZR bass to a P/H, using the EMG 35TWX and an active EMG P pickup.

I urge you to try the 35tw on one bass first before buying more 35tw. They are great soap bars but not the same as the P or J pickups. They have their own tone(s).

My Student Spector had the OEM 35 on it and I upgraded to TWX, while it sounds great it’s not the same ass MM pickups. It has this very 90’S style tone.

Yeah! I will not do anything before I have thoroughly listened to it, no worries.

For a P/H a 35TW(X) makes a lot of sense (providing it sounds ok), as I can switch from Humbucker to single coil (making it a PJ), and even select the active single coil. So I effectively have two bridge positions, yay.
Pretty excited to finally listen to that … in a few days.

And: I can always get a 35DC, if I want to play it safe!

EDIT can you describe the difference in tone between the TW and the TWX?

Louder and more head room. EMG pickups are usually not very hot compared to other active pickups but it’s not a bad thing. X series just put it on par with other hot pickups level.

You also get better headroom out of one 9v battery than the usual 18v. Note that 18v power plant doesn’t usually means more volume on most preamps, just more headroom or the ability to turn up the volume without clipping.

Another thing to consider is that unlike other pickups EMG pickups can be raised up all the way underneath the strings without much trouble with tone clarity if you want more volume that can be easily solved.

Yeah, I noticed that, when I could play my active EMG bass with the same gain setting on the audio interface as the DP126.

You are referring to the TWX, right? That does not sound bad per sé

No plans for 18V … I’m going green and will save the world by using less power

Once upon a time, there was a Mad Dutchman living in Germany, who started playing bass… :slightly_smiling_face:

Is that you figuring out which pickup to use?

Doubt it, it doesn’t look complicated enough. I think that’s him just trying to decide on which pasta to make with dinner (I can tell by the picture of the elbow macaroni in the top corner).

To be honest, it looked like this:

But I had that thingy on my head (I always have, in fact!).

Breaking news: I have changed my mind and will use the 35TWX, not the 35TW.

So when I’m done I will have three Harley Benton MV-4MSBs:

  • Ronin: 2x 35TWX
  • Pink’s Hot: 1x 35TWX and EMG active P
  • Fretless Minty-Minty-Mint: EMG active/P/J

As I will have three 35TWX, I can install the VLPF on all basses. So now it makes all sense again

Close, it’s the recipe for “Vanille Kipferl” … the only good thing in Germany!
