Why did you pick up bass/what makes you like it?

Damn that’s pretty hateful to say to an 8 year old. You don’t have to be nice about it. She sucked.

Damn Mom!

Between this and the other story, That guy sounded like he really had it out for you. What a dick.

I dealt with a number of assholes too.

My main concern in music is sound design and production. I wanted something hands-on to write with and bass, with vocals and drums, is one voice instrument, so it can behave like a lead element, but also has to have a constant dialogue and discussion with other parts of the musical spectrum, so it even can act just as a background. “invisible” glue. It’s by far the most interesting instrument in the aspect of its role in my opinion.

So yeah, I’veve picked up bass mainly because I find it really interesting musically.

+1. Just generally making music is all I really care about. I do think bass is the most fun instrument I have played though

Talent for the most part only really helps you at the beginning and after a certain point, it’s the amount of work you put into it.

There are though certain personality traits that make learning things easier… If you’re not easily bored by things and can practice stuff over and over and over… if you have good critical thinking skills and you can analyze a situation and figure out how to correct issues, if you’re a small details/finesse type of person that can see the small things that make a big difference like eliminating wasted effort and maximizing your efficiency. There are a lot of things you can do that makes it easier to learn and reduces the number of hours required.

If you’ve done much focused/self directed learning before, played another instrument or learned a second+ language, there are a lot of skills that you can apply from that to learn other new things. I see a lot of people on Reddit that come on there asking how to learn to play bass and they have no idea how to even get started. A lot of adults seem to forget or be afraid of the method children use to learn things… you need to experiment, try new things and not be afraid to fail a lot.

I played guitar for a few years and just wasn’t loving it…i had though for a while about trying bass but i didn’t want to give up on guitar. One day I happened to see a Yamaha bass on amazon warehouse deals so i snatched it up quick! Back in my school days i played trombone and bassoon so i guess bass is just my thing because i loved bass guitar as soon as i got started with it. By the time I got the bass, i’d already been watching Adam Neely, Davie and Bassbuzz for quite a while so i had a good handle on a lot of things. I already had Fender Play for guitar so i did that for a few weeks and then did Bassbuzz which was a great way to build skills fast!

It’s funny, I’d watched Adam Neely for years before trying bass and i always though “man he’s so talented skilled, he plays piano and guitar, why would he choose bass as his main instrument?” Now i understand.

That is a direct reflection on the teachers ability to teach.
It was not that you, at 8 years old were not capable of being taught, it was that he, an adult I assume, was not good enough to teach you effectively at the start.
Sounds like because you were last out the gate, and he could not see HIS progress fast enough, he decided to take the cowards way out and cast blame at an 8 year old.

He could have talked to you or your parents and just asked, “do you want to play music in your life”, and if the answer is yes, he could have suggested private lessons as well as music class. to help get you up to speed.
But
Instead of taking the blame himself, he inflicted a wound on an 8 year old kid, so deep, it still hurts 42 years later.

Don’t worry, Josh won’t do that too you, and the rest of us are here to help as well.

And like you stated at the end of that paragraph, I too, hope he led a long and happy life, and it would be very nice if he either went back to school himself, to do whatever it took to become a capable music teacher, OR, for the sake of 42 years worth of 8 year olds,
I hope he chose a new profession.

CUZ

And, hey, they don’t even do music in elementary schools anymore. not lil High School for the most part, unless its a private school, or specialized school.

Thank you, you are very kind. I appreciate the support. When I posted that I just wanted it said. I didn’t expect to to see the huge amount of consideration and understanding I’ve received.
My journey in this has just started. I’ve only Been playing since mid-may of this year. I really like the way Josh teaches. There is no shaming about lack of ability or blasting anyone for"just not getting it"
I was really afraid of exclusivity, Meaning because I wasn’t in the secret club I would be considered less than valid-I’m truly happy to say that hasn’t happened at all here. Ever.
I’m so happy with the program and what it has done me that I’ve bought my grandson and niece each a bass and a copy of the program. Because I know that here they won’t be ridiculed fot not immediately being amazing.
All of you guys have been great, and I hopei can be as supportive and helpful. Thank you so much!

Just wanted to say, with 2 school age kids, this wasn’t my experience at all… Public school, and instruments were an option as of 3rd grade…

Like many here, I started out on guitar - even took 3rd place at the Illinois State Fair back about 1962 or there abouts - played Hank Williams SR “You’re Cheatin’ Heart”…. Woulda placed higher but I didn’t bring the sheet music with me for the judges to look at while I was playing…. They asked me why I didn’t bring the music sheet and I said, “Why?.. I already know how to play the song!..”…. Guess I was always kind of a smart ass even back then:rofl::rofl:.

I played guitar for many years - mostly in church worship groups but did manage to play with a couple garage bands over the years… Even one when I was in the Navy…

Getting old sux, and trying to keep up with the young kids now a days that can shread the the shit off of a wad of used toilet paper, I decided that I could no longer compete - especially with arthritis in my wrists and fingers - so, a little over two years ago I decided to try my hand at bass….

I had an old Squire P that I bought for one of my grandsons who tried playing with me on guitar, but he grew up (he’s the father of my “Great” grandson)…. Anyway, he gave it back to me and I started @JoshFossgreen’s B2B course….

Well, the rest is history….

So, “Why did I pick up bass?”….

Because I love making music…. And the tones that it produces is kinda like “Viagra” to my heart and soul…!! I’m YOUNG again when I play the damn thing!!:rofl::rofl:

Keep On Thumpin’!
