My bass came with flatwounds on it. Should I change them out for roundwounds for learning/doing the BTB course?

You might have less then stellar results when slapping, but the rest should be fine.

Short answer: no.
Flats will get you through the course just fine.
If you have previous experience playing guitar, flats will likely feel weird to you: kinda slick compared to the grippy texture of rounds.
But if you’re brand new to steel string instruments, you should do fine with flats.
