That makes sense. Grovers were the shit back in the day. I owned a Rick 4001 in the early ‘70s.
Wish I still had it, but I traded it in on a new Fender Rhodes.

Has anyone replaced the clovers on a Fender style headstock with Y keys? How does this end up looking?
I considered this briefly but the tuners on my new MIJ are quite good, no need to change them. But I definitely considered going with a Y instead.
I think it would look very good; ESP has some close approximations:
