Yamaha TRBX304, BOSS WAZA-AIR BASS, & Wi-Fi

Just checking in. The headphones appeared, I plugged them in and thumped a bit. Initial impression was, “wowza, waza-air!” It seemed as if I was about two millimeters tall and standing directly under the strings on the pickup. I could hear everything. Quite awesome and untangled. Then I settled into some lessons. Dropouts were frequent - 5 or 6 during an introduction segment. Just playing along and then… silence. Headphones off, transmitter out, then on/in again usually reconnected. I noticed that if I silenced the strings, then there was what can pass for silence from the headphones. However, if I plucked a string, I would get its tone along with a light static clicking that was roughly regular. I tried a few rounds of pairing the transmitter with the headphones to see if that would clear things up, just guessing there might be a channel change happening. At one point, I got it to lose most of the static. I’m going to have to go back and read the instructions, try some troubleshooting, and pick through the forums. Anyway, it feels like a keeper so far. I’ll see how it goes. No trouble with the TRBX304 jack wiring, that I can tell. Same with/without the “fix-it” adapter.

cheers all!

Just checking back in here with a result and resolution. My concerns about a noisy 2.4 GHz RF environment were well-founded. As noted above, I was getting a lot of dropouts, both Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz, and also getting some odd clicking every time I plucked a string. I contacted Roland support to see if there was any fix for it. They provided an 8 page canned response that contained info that I could not find in the instructions or support docs on their site. Summarizing:

  • Pair the transmitter with the headphones before each use. Pairing evaluates 14 channels and picks the best one. << this seems to work pretty well to decrease the 2.4 GHz dropouts and reduce or prevent the interference / clicking.
  • Turn off as many other Bluetooth devices as I have control over when pairing the headphones with a Mac, an iPhone, etc. to hear Josh’s lessons. << I still get disconnects, but just not as frequently.
  • My Yamaha TRBX304 wiring plays nicely with WAZA-Air Bass headphones. No mitigations needed

So, it’s a keeper, and I have it mostly sorted.

Your setup concerns are valid, especially with the TRBX304 and WAZA-AIR BASS adapters. Has anyone tried a low-profile adapter to keep things tidy?

Also, with so many Wi-Fi networks around, has anyone experienced latency or interference with the WAZA-AIR BASS in a crowded RF environment? Any insights would be helpful.

I can see 32 hotspots im my home and 22 bluetooth devices (that’s excluding IoT/BLE/Beacon stuff, which is usually hidden from normal bluetooth scans).
Can’t say anything about WAZA Air, but I never experience difficulties with RF devices (neither digital nor analog), except with my SleepBuds when I’m further that 3m from the transmitting device (due to limitations of the Sleepbuds).

I used Android Bluetooth Scanner and Net Analyzer to check. For IoT devices I always used another app, can’t remember which one though (probably something like BLE Scanner).
