Saw ZZ Top in Pensacola. Elwood Francis plays with a pick. Which is fine. I’ve yet to get the speed that Dusty Hill had finger plucking. Billy Gibbons is 76 years old and is one of the best guitarists still touring. Go see them! Not only do you get great music, you get to see the wild basses that Elwood plays. They blew the roof off the joint!
I’ve seen ZZ open for the Stones in Texas Stadium. Superb show.
While the “Little Ol’ Band from Texas” is originally from Houston, Billy has played and been spotted regularly in Austin. I bumped into him at a lakeside beer/burger joint on the shore of Lake Austin. Super-humble dude. He’s the first to say, “I ain’t nothin’ special,” which, of course, is a lie.
This September, Billy will play the Crossroads Guitar Festival here in Austin, sharing the bill with Clapton, Buddy Guy, Jimmie Vaughn, Pete Townsend, Tommy Emmanuel, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Keb Mo’, Taj Mahal, Gary Clark Jr., John Mayer, and many, many more acts. God knows how long the show will be! It starts at 5:30pm, if that’s any indication.
Yesterday, I bought presale tix on the floor, center, 11th row. It cost a king’s ransom, but I couldn’t be happier. Gonna blow the walls off the joint.
