I’m jonesin’ for a 24 fret neck thru body Bass. I looking at the lower to mid range prices. Something under a grand. Jackson has some affordable options at around $500-550 for their Series Spectra Bass SBX IV or (the Jackenbacker) - X Series Concert™ Bass CBXDX IV.
Also considering a Schecter Stiletto Studio-4 which is pricier but likely higher quality.
Anyone out there have any of these? What your thoughts?
Looking to be able to access the upper frets without having to deal with a neck heel/body joint as big as those found on bolt on necks. That’s the main reason.
I’d definitely stick with schecter. It’s Their wheelhouse mid range neck through bass.
If you find yourself playing those notes on the dusty end often you may want to consider getting a reasonably priced 5 string and tune it EADGC. I tune a few of my basses with C string.
Good plan @Al1885 ! When I was trying to play Bach I restrung the T-bird as ADGC and it worked pretty well. It apparently puts the range closer to a cello…
I’m working with Mayones to spec a custom 5-string fretless short scale Comodous. I hope it’s doable. I was going to buy a custom 4-string shorty to go with my 17" Cali 4 and Cali 5, but I read the Bass Player mag interview with John Myung yesterday where he mentioned that a 5-string bass is perfectly aligned with the standard tuning of a cello (C2-A6). Myung also mentioned that he thought that Bach understood the bass clef better than other composers and mentioned Bach’s 6 Suites for solo cello. I found the .PDF and MuseScore files for those Suites in the MuseScore shop (free!). I’ve got ONE word for them: CHALLENGING!
I have one 5-string bass, but it’s fretted and I want to learn those suites on a fretless.
Are you working with Matt? He is the prime contact with Mayones for custom builds.
Matt took my custom build spec requests directly to Mayones’ owner, Dawid, to get his permission to have this one-off bass made. Dawid OK’ed it on the condition that a master builder be assigned do the work. It took 15 months to build, but it was worth it to me.
Man, I wish I had the free time. I run my own creative agency for high tech clients, and I’m either slammed or dead tired on the regular. I’m lucky to get any practice time in.
It’s a double-edge sword: Having a lot of business is great, but the operative term in “business” is “busy.”
I maintain some semblance of sanity by being on the forum during work breaks. Interacting with friends here is good for the soul.
