HAHA, we are so opposite @howard, i love it.
I wouldn’t want a Dingwall as it sounds as is, but I love the design.
At least I think I don’t (only based on videos I have heard).
To me it rocks after the mods. Much more versitle for a cool looking 5.
He should have thrown in the 6 way selector first, ran through the additional tones, then swapped the preamps.
Hey wait, I could do that!
Their purples are really nice, even the swirl.
Sweet Brown! One of my favorite memes of all time…
I generally prefer natural bodies, and tend to dislike pickguards, but damn that’s purty…
I really love their purples, yeah.
Next question for you is Nolly vs Combustion vs Afterburner
Nolly. NG3
I’m thinking if I do it I get exactly the color I want and just order one Vs trying to get whatever color is around or out. I can wait.
I’m going to go play one for feel first though.
The guy I bought my amp/cab from is a dealer, so is little shop owner the bridge.
Yeah I would imagine they are highly available in NYC.
Yeah but most inventory is gone. New Jersey guy has a few still though.
Dingwalls are the rolls royce under basses imo. Why on earth would you mod them? Every bass player that I heard about Dingwalls are really impressed. Among those players are even hardcore jazz players .
Exactly. It’s already got one of the best preamps you can buy. The Darkglass teamup is one of the things that actually distinguishes the Nolly
Yet another example of “wtf, Lobster?” I guess.
I mean, he likes it better now, so there’s that. And he owns it, so sure, go for it. But I just don’t get it. Why get it in the first place if you don’t like the thing? This is kind of like buying an EBMM Stingray knowing you really didn’t like it, and modding it into a J-bass. Except maybe worse than that because, again, one of the things that makes the NG3 different from the other sub-custom Dingwalls is the Darkglass electronics, instead of the EMG or Glockenklang in the other models.
Oh yeah, clicks. Never mind
Nice NG3 just sold here. Intact
About $2500 used. Still too much for me, especially since that’s only like $200 off their new price, and unfortunately a 5, but - nice bass.
Damn that one is nice! I actually find 5 string spacing comfortable with a pick. It feels more like how it is on the guitar.
Also if you want to add more strings and want to keep it cheap you can do something like this too:

“I modded my bass!”
Seriously, @John_E - why even get a Nolly in this case? Why not just get a Combustion instead, which already has an EMG preamp, and costs about $200 less? Both are made in China, so there’s no difference there, and both will be among the best basses you can buy. Is it just the finish choice?
I mean, I think they look pretty damn good too
I would want the Nolly specifically because I would want the Tone Capsule.
Yeah that’s the stuff ![]()
Dingwall + Darkglass, like peanut butter and chocolate.
Combustion sounds great too with the EMG:
- Matching headstock
- DG tone capsule - I would not mod the bass out of the gate, and can always go back, the EMG preamp is not my thing. Glocks are great though
- The 6 way switch is still a great idea
I still have to go play one reasonably close, only going by what I hear online which can be deceiving for sure.
They are a bit cheaper here used. I purple Mopar just sold on Talkbass not too long ago.
I’m still shopping and considering.
Yeah that seems like a win.
Add switch to series/parallel connect the P pickup. There you go, you have J/J also!
