Apple music vs. spotify?

thinking of getting off spotify for various reasons (ethical, financial, UX/UI, audio quality) - and was wondering if anyone has any opinions on apple music vs. spotify?

Surely a New York hipster like yourself should be buying cassettes

No real opinion of one vs the other, but I use Apple Music. Works seamless with my iPhone, what I particularly like is asking Siri to play (insert song title, artist, or even a fragment of lyric) and most of the time it gets it.

I have a family account so my daughter can use it, as well as my wife.

my 8-track and laserdisc collection takes up too much room already.

Apple Music here too, Apple One is just a bargain especially if you were wanting to get more iCloud storage or Apple TV anyway.

Spotify boycott: Artists leave 'garbage hole' platform after CEO invests in AI weapons – Anything but spotify? My house recently switched to Qobuz which has the highest payouts to artists currently. It doesn’t have all the fancy recommendations stuff that spotify and such do, but they do have a deal where if you sub they give you a coupon to a service that helps you migrate you playlists and loved artists, albums and tracks over.

exactly - i do have apple tv+ and am on the full apple ecosystem (iPhone, macbooks, apple tv), so it seems like a smart move.

After being a longtime user of Spotify I made the switch a couple of years ago. And I couldn’t be happier. I had to get used to the interface again but that’s about it. The interface is a lot better with MacOS Tahoe and iOS26. There is an alternative player for your iPhone called Marvis Pro. I have been using it whole now and I like it but I am not sure if it justifies the purchase price.
AM integrates nicely with my collection of old ripped CD’s and downloads. And it pays artists better than Spotify, which is important to me.
The sound quality is noticeably better than Spotify.
You can easily import your Spotify playlists in Apple music. There is an option in the web version of Apple Music.
What I also like is that it seems less strict when using it on different devices at the same time. Spotify would freak out. Although I have to say that we have an Apple oriented household so everything is nicely integrated.
As for pricing, I have a Family plan with Apple Music combined with AppleTV, an extra 200Gb iCloud storage and Apple Arcade. which makes less expensive than Spotify

I love Apple Music but the way Apple setup the ecosystem is just terrible. I have 3 small children they use my devices and I have a lot of Apple products and 75% of them are logged in under my username, sure enough I can’t use half of that because iTunes can only allowed 10 users and I can’t delete it, it’s almost like first come first serve device.

Last time I contacted Apple to fix this issue, it took almost an hour and less than 1 hour later it’s the same issue. I now use Amazon music and Youtube music, or my purchased library. The bonus of using Youtube music is you have more video.

Apple Music is the way for me. I am a lifelong Apple devotee (Apple TV, multiple Macs, Air Pods Max, pro apps, etc., etc).

Yeah for me it was a no-brainer.

I remember stealing all of the Metallica albums on Napster and iTunes made it very difficult with all of that pesky drm stuff

none of the above

get free prime through work, so i’d be kinda daft not to use amazon music :joy:

I’ve got access to Prime Music. But I’ve never had need to use it.

lol, i may as well now, makes no sense paying for subscriptions when i get that free

Yeah I have Prime too but really mostly use it for movies more than music as Apple has me covered

I’m an Android and PC user, so Apple music wouldn’t be an alternative to me. But I’m giving serious thought on leaving Spotify because I really dislike how they treat artists, and the AI thing too. At the moment I don’t know the alternatives and haven’t had time to research them. But I would be interested in knowing what else people here use instead of Spotify, Apple or Amazon prime.

I’m definitely going to read more about that.

A good name for this thread could be ā€œAlternatives to blood sucking music streaming servicesā€.

In the great tradition of 10 years olds I will now list the music streamers I have tried in date order

  1. Spotify - Good front end, good range of music / screws over artists, some objectionable content

  2. Tidal - High quality option, option to pay more for the artists / relatively limited database, connection issues

  3. Youtube music - free with YT premium, some useful features for phones, massive database / poor quality control (includes covers, bad remixes etc), confusing front end, Google

  4. Deezer - Not Google, some good ā€˜discovery’ features / poor connection, no app for PC, ginormous cache size

Sooo…. I went back to YT music - I was paying for YT Premium so I thought what’s the point paying for two streaming services :frowning:
