today I had a rough day with daughter at the hospital. all ok its a long-term problem but hard for her. well tonight I got the bass out and tried to do a lesson but nothing I did felt right. I tried some old things but still nothing felt right. so I put it all away as I didnt want to bake any bad habits in. tell me im not alone in this?
Sorry to hear about your daughter!
As far as your bass playing troubles are concerned: you are not alone!
Some days, you just don’t feel it; there is no inspiration, nothing seems to work.
Don’t worry and don’t sweat it. Put down the bass and let it sit for today. Come back tomorrow with a fresh mind and you’ll find you got your bass mojo back ![]()
thank at least im not alone in feeling like this.
You’re not alone. We definitely have all those days. Hang in there yeah?
I will definitely come back to it tomorrow. as I have really enjoyed learning so far
I agree, life gets in the way and we have to walk away from our passions and take time to find the love again.
Normally this is a day or so when you see your set up, ready to play calling you back.
Good luck @Mktony32
You are not alone.
Frustrates the hell out of me when I’m having a rough day, want to use music to lift my mood, and it’s just not working.
What I try doing instead is to just… make noise. Do not “work” on anything. No lessons. No learning. No “practicing”. No dusting off an old song.
Just grab a bass - preferably my fretless - and just make noises on it. Do random things until I find something that fits and sound “right”. I often then record it that to come back to later.
That happens, for sure.
I do that same thing…probably more than I should. Noodling, some say. But I’ll plug in through some pedal and just make it absurd. Just to hear the noise. And many times something sounds cool and I’ll record it for later.
I had a much better time of it today. Managed to get a couple of lessons from module 7 done. Also sorted out being able to record bass sound into the laptop and then marry back up to video. Better sound for my videos . So learning new skills . My First musical instrument and video editing for you tube.
Module 7 was the first one that made me set it down and come back later.
I’m sorry to hear about your daughter, and I hope everything will be alright. No wonder you had a bad day. In days like that it seems nothing works as it normally would.
Yeah, she is not too bad today, thank you. She has multiple health problems, including a torn hip that causes her a lot of pain. It’s a long road, but we will get there.
You are SO not alone. We are not machines! We are humans with complex emotional lives, energy levels that go up and down, bodies that don’t behave the same way every day. It’s good that you reached out here so we can share this. I hope you are being compassionate with yourself.
thank you
Sorry to hear about your daughter. These are the times when I prefer to play the drums.
You are definitely not alone. As one of my co-workers once said, “Some days you eat the bear…some days the bear eats you.”
Another bad day today. It seemed like I could not get time to myself to practice. My daughter had teenage friendship drama. She’s 15, so I was dealing with helping her with that, then every time I got going, it just went wrong. So for peace of mind, I have put it down for the day. I want to enjoy the bass, not feel too frustrated that things went wrong.
ooof having been a teen girl at one point many decades ago still haven’t forgotten how rough the friend drama can be. So many big feelings and not so much life experience navigating them. Sending y’all good vibes on it settling down.
It’s only understandable that you’d be struggling a bit too. Literally last night I hit one of those walls midway through a song that is a challenge but I enjoy. Both my hands and my brain noped out and made it clear continuing would just be frustration. So I called it.
Today tho I’m gonna try getting some practice in at a different time of day and switch to a different tuning. Shaking things up like that can help me. Like the music brain equivalent of push starting my car when the battery is dead. Once I’ve got things going it’s much easier to keep going than fighting the entropy of a dead stop.
I don’t know if that’s at all useful but you’re not alone in the struggling to maintain consistent practice. Sometimes it’s just hard.
Thank you, I normally get some good quality time in. But with multiple things going on with her today, it was just a mess.
