Long story, please bear with me…
Years ago, I toured as a guitar/bass/backline tech. I worked mostly with southern rock bands. My favorite was my time with the Marshall Tucker Band.
This was in the mid 90’s - early 2000’s. The original line up ended in 1980 with Tommy’s death in a freak vehicle accident, Tommy’s brother, Toy died in 1993, followed by the death of guitarist George McCorkle in 2007.
For the past few years, MTB’s bass chair has been held by Spartanburg, South Carolina’s (MTB’s home) Ryan Ware, he’s younger than the rest but he’s a perfect fit for the band. They were in Nashville last year, playing at the Ryman Auditorium and I had the chance for my Son and I (he grew up with these guys, now he’s 28) to stop by and hang with the band and crew during soundcheck and check out the show, Dave Mason was also playing.
It was the first time that I met Ryan, he’s a great guy. I didn’t notice at first, but during the show I saw that he was playing a 70’s white Fender P bass just like the one Tommy played before his death.
Later, I was messaging him on FB and mentioned how cool it was that he was playing a “tribute to Tommy” bass, he then told me that it was Tommy’s bass. He was the son of one of MTB’s original road crew and Toy gave him Tommy’s bass and amp/cabs when he was 8 years old!
It’s pretty cool that it has gone full circle and being played with MTB again. Last night, MTB was playing at the Grand Old Opry house , again in Nashville. my guitar player buddy and I met at the Opry House (in the middle of several tornados, sadly with fatalities). At first, everyone in the building were moved to the middle (no audience, this was during sound check), but after a while, we were allowed to get everything going again.
FINALLY (The reason for this post) I was looking forward to seeing, maybe even playing Tommy’s bass. Ryan walk on the stage holding a white P bass, but this one had a white pickguard. The band rocked, Doug Gray (who wrote and sang Heard it in a love song) has dealt with some heath issues but last night he looked and sounded great.
With the weather situation, we didn’t stay for the show, but as I was leaving Tucker’s tour manager and I were catching up and we were teasing Ryan about being so young, when Dibby (tour manager) said, that’s Tommy’s bass that he’s playing, I asked about it and he said that Ryan had swapped the pickup and pickguard, and he added active electronics. After I gave Ryan a dirty look, he responded by saying “Hey, it’s not like I’m going to sell it” . Youth. sigh.
Here’s a pic of Tommy.

Here’s a pic of Ryan.

And here’s a pic of me and David “Dibby” Warren with Tommy’s bass as it looks today.
I have a 1976 Fender P bass that need to be completely restored, eventually I am going to turn it into my own Tommy tribute bass…
