It needs some repairs (one pickup dead), but otherwise in great vintage condition and I plan to give it a clean and get it working, but otherwise keep this 1963 Hofner absolutely standard. Even the strings on it feel original (sadly the E snapped while removing it for it’s first inspection). It came from an estate sale of a local professional musician who played it from new. His guitar collection was also interesting (but well outside my area interest).
It was bought as an investment, but the first tone tests make me think I’m going to fall in love with it.
It appears to be a thumb rest. I don’t know if that was spec’ed by a customer, although it seems likely.
I haven’t laid hands on any of this luthier’s wares, but his shop is about 90 miles away, or so. I just might take a drive to check out his stuff. His electrics are primarily guitars and their designs are pretty eclectic. He uses minimal power tools and no CNC. He also uses lots of native Texas woods. Interesting guy.
