I started taking in-person lessons again, and my new instructor uses Songsterr. I signed up for it - it’s only $10/month - but some of the tabs on the songs I already know look… weird.
So, what are our thoughts on Songsterr? Is it a good resource? Or kinda “meh”?
I use it along with Chordify. You can slow down, loop, play the song in full (YouTube version) or in synth mode mute certain instruments to make it easier.
I like it. You can cancel your subscription at any time and restart with no penalty.
I think it’s decent, but as with most online tab resources, it’s really hit or miss. The catalog is huge, you can slow down the playback speed and listen to the isolated bass so it’s pretty useful in that regard. A lot of the tabs are wrong though and so for that reason I never actually learn anything all the way through on Songsterr. It’s mostly a resource for me if I can’t figure out a specific part of a song. I’ll look it up and hope. Worth the $5/mo IMO.
I have the paid version, and i think it’s great. The YouTube link can help. i think something to remember is there aren’t curators-it’s ordinary folks doing the tabs, sooo.
But that is ultimate guitar as well, and i really really dislike their format and layout.
I agree, I paid for a year of UG Pro and I sub to Songsterr. I like Songsterr’s layout way more. I also can’t get into the synth versions of songs and that’s all UGPro offers. In general I think the tabs are better than UG (although again, curated by ordinary folks). I’ll stay subbed to Songsterr, but when the year lapses I’m going to let UG go and on the occasions that I use it, I’m fine using the free version. Depending on the song, the Pro tabs really aren’t a ton better than the free ones. The one feature I hope Songsterr adds eventually is an in stream stem splitter. With what they’re doing with stem splitting and AI, I think that’s a realistic expectation in the near future.
Do note, that you can make both private and submitted edits to any tab on songster. I’m fixing the Crazy by Gnarls Barkley one to match Josh’s version, I’ll submit it for public when I’m finished. .
I’ll often compare the UG Pro to Songsterr when I really have doubts and they are usually on par with each other.
I use both Songsterrrrrrrr and Ultimate Guitar. Both are equally awesome and crummy at the same time. I tend to look at them as a “good enough for government work” source. It gets you to the point where you can sound competent and work out the fiddly bits using better sources or my own ear.
Same. I find that UG Pro often has songs that aren’t available on Songsterr, and you can get standard notation along with tabs, which I like. When a song is on both, however, I like having two versions to compare; I often find the Songsterr version a bit simpler and more useful to me. Plus I like the Songsterr feature that lets you play with the original recording on YouTube.
Inaccuracies are a deal breaker for me regardless of how many notes I’m going to use, for the most part it’s the technical part where I need the accuracy the most.
Yeah the GP thread is a cool idea to help people get started but the tab quality on the pro sites is simply far higher than what the free software emits for the Rocksmith community contributed files. Plus the Standard Notation output from that thing is often complete nonsense.
That said to use as a starting point, it’s a cool thing they are doing in that thread.
Good enough for government work? I haven’t heard that phrase in years! Are you prior military? that was a common military phrase! I preferer songster over UG, I Have both and will probably discontinue UG when it’s up!
I have both as well. As far as accuracy, I’m not a professional musician, just a bedroom hobbyist. I just like to play along with a song and if Songsterr is 99% accurate, then that’s good enough for me. Plus, I don’t know the point of just playing along with a Synth. For me at least, the point is to play along with the actual song. Songsterr does this and has various play back options as well. I will likely let my UG subscription run out at the end of the year.
The issue I’d like to solve is that playing Songsterr through my iPad speakers sucks. Using my AirPods is better, but I’m also playing using my amp. Add on top of that, that I sometimes use a headset and now I’ve got those on top of my AirPods. I would like to find a way to play it all through one setup. YouTube videos show people just playing along with a song like it’s coming through regular speakers, music and bass, but I’m not sure how they are doing this.
Maybe check out a TB3 or USB3 docking station, plug the ipad into that. That should give you all the ports you’d ever need to plug in headphones, speaker, DAI etc. You can even hook up an external monitor to it, although it’s going to maintain the ipad’s aspect ratio.
