The jack is a TRS jack that uses the sleeve of the TS plug to complete a circuit between the pins in the jack. The jack itself is literally the power switch for the bass. You can plug a TS 1/4 to 1/8 adapter plug into a bass that is going nowhere and it will still drain it
Pedals work the same way. The bypass switch is not a power switch for most pedals. The power is on as long as a cable is plugged in.
