Related/unrelated. Just restrung and worked on the set up of my p-bass. Put a set of flatwounds on, definitely a cool sound. Adjusted the action and intonation as well. Feeling pretty proud of myself. How to videos are pretty easy to find, but this vid from Roger Sadowsky on how to set up your bass is one of the best I’ve found. Started in January, cruising through at an easy pace while doing some practicing and learning some songs. Right now I’m in Module 8, enjoying the lessons, trying to practice major scales daily, and excited to be starting the 50 song challenge.
I’ve just finished the last lesson of Module 8 but I want to go over the workouts again and at least get the medium tempos right before I move on to Module 9.
Im just in the middle of module 15. I really enjoyed module 14 at the end
I feel good by James Brown I played along with the youtube video of it and it was a lot of fun… You really feel like a bassist when you jam along. Module 15 is a lot of jamming along with stuff and even just doing simple riffs and chord progressions is just great fun to do.
Just finished module 12, which I found pretty tough. Sliding octaves around the neck was difficult for me. The last lesson, Under the Bridge, went pretty well though. Was able to do the fast lesson no problem. Now on to slapping!
I found the octaves lessons really tough too… Moving the octaves, muting, plucking… I just kept tripping over myself (other than the slow workouts). There’s been a few times that I said “got through the slow - I’m free to move on” (after trying the medium and fast). I just don’t want to spend weeks perfecting a lesson before moving on (I’d probably still be trying to get through she-who-shall-not-be-named). I’ll go back to them eventually, and hopefully I’ll find them easier.
Two years after the course and I still can’t do the disco octaves one at full speed
way to crush my optimism @howard… lol
Just got through Module 10, so only the last of the three course sections left to go
Realised only now, that I should have taken notes on the more difficult/interesting lessons I should get back to, because I can’t really remember clearly all of them even from the more recent modules
But anyway…
M9 had the most interesting theory stuff for me this far. I think I have some faint recollection of learning about diatonic chord progression waaaay back, but at least had forgotten pretty much about it. Liked the minor scale improv (minor improv beats major) and the reggae lesson especially.
In M10 it was fun to play actual songs, and longer chord progressions than before. Have to return to the Some Kind of Wonderful lesson, when I am ready to work on my fretting hand muting. Playing it wasn’t otherwise that hard, but no way I could handle that - I know it wasn’t required but still!
Now it’s forum song challenge time, gonna learn that Another Brick on the Wall.
agreeing with skydvr here…
Hey Kowry, I have the booklet, and circled the lessons to go back to. That was an easy way to do it. That might be a good post actually…calling out the lessons that were fun or challenging in each module…looks like I might have some work to do
I had the same thought yesterday. I can’t even remember everything I’ve learned so far. I think I will pick some random workout from earlier lessons as a warmup.
Ha!
I wouldn’t read anything in to that - I think I just suck at plucking octaves
I should go back and practice that one.
Well, I’m officially 2 months in and not quite finished yet. Partway through module 15 and enjoying the first few lessons of Jam with the Band. I’ve slowed down as the lessons have gotten harder/longer. Where early in the course I was typically doing two or three lessons back to back now I’m usually only doing one at a time. The slap module kinda took the wind of my sails a bit - I guess going back to square one after making so much progress was a little tough. Anyway, still expect to finish in the next week-ish ![]()
I’m all of 5 days in and on Module 3. A lot of this is very familier from when I first tried learning to play 15 years ago, fiting the lessons to some backing music is definitely making it a lot more fun this time around though.
My little finger is getting a serious workout at the moment though, and shifting along the frets whilst avoiding unwanted sliding and buzzing noises is my other main problem.
Module 13 has taught me that I’m not a good slap bass player!! I’m not a good slap bass player yet. I will continue to work on it because it sounds so cool when it is done well, but I need to move on before I get too far behind in the 50 Song Challenge.
I will revisit Module 13 and become a better slapper!! and popper!!
I still have buzzing here and there, but when you find the sweet spot on your bass I think you can even relax you fingers a bit and there won’t be a buzz. I know when I fight it and trying pressing harder it never works out, try repositioning your finger just a bit.
Keep at it!!
Right there with you @BigRichieO frankly considering skipping all of module 13 until I can actually slap and pop. Lesson 1 was fine, but then things got all crazy with lesson 2 and was like slap all of the strings now! Sadly I failed. So I figure practice slap and pop technique, then go back…
Anybody else finding the slower workouts to be the hardest? I’m finding it so much easier to get into the rhythmn on the medium and even fast workouts, so far the slower workouts are requiring a lot more thinking on keepin on beat and sometimes it’s messing up my fingering.
Definitely early on in the course. Once the fretting became more complex the fast workouts were tougher for me though.
Notice they’re named by tempo, not difficulty
