Beginner to Badass Reviews? šŸŽø

I cannot thank @JoshFossgreen enough for producing B2B. Up until a few weeks ago, I’d never had a Bass guitar in my hands. Watching his free videos on youtube gave me the itch and his teaching style was engaging and relatable.

I just started Module 2 and I like the way Josh always builds upon the last lesson in incremental building blocks.

Thank you! Glad the message seems to have come across well, I’m so grateful for the course, as you can most likely tell

So happy to hear you are still enjoying your journey, and actually you make an excellent point - the wonderful community is just as much a part of that as the course.

Thank you so much!

Loved the course as others have said…Josh is a gifted teacher who instructs with passion and clear intention…the videos are nice and short chunks that can give you a sense of accomplishment in one 15 minute sitting if that’s all the time you have.

The videos and instruction are of such a high quality as to set the bar for online music teaching…I have sent these videos to others learning guitar and piano just to show them what to look for as they pursue their own online courses.

For constructive feedback: the layout of the sight is a little wonky and I often get confused trying to find the course extras (audio tracks and modules) and I somehow end up on the marketing splash page (hopefully someday the site will be smart enough to know that im a logged in user and redirect me back to the bussbuzz course rather than the marketing page)…I would also love Josh’s youtube series to be integrated into the course and site as some of those are very valuable (thinking specifically of the blues box but there are many others)

Best online music course I’ve ever taken…thank you so much Josh can’t wait for the follow up course!

great course, thanks to josh i was finally able to understand theory alot better and helped to improve my technique too

it’s taking me alot of repeats to process all the information because my dumb brain takes a while to process stuff lol, but this is still digestible enough i at least have the very basic stuff down but your milage may vary

if i were to start from block 1, i’d get the course immediately. if you haven’t… you should

On module 7. So far very good course with the right amount of repetitiveness. I like the ā€œbite sizedā€ approach. The early lessons may be a hair too simple if you’ve ever picked up a bass before, but keeping it bite sized keeps the early lessons engaging and I still managed to pick up a few things early on. For instance I didn’t need to hear which string was which repeatedly, but anchoring locations with my plucking hand was useful - in my ā€œself teachingsā€ I had always only anchored on the pickup.

The later lessons pick up speed and have the right combination of theory and practice, combined with a good level of repetitiveness so that concepts are sticking a bit better then with a self-taught progression.

Consistently enforcing use of the left pinky is also a nice touch. It’s too easy if you pick up a bass and just screw around with it just to find lines where you can avoid that dreaded pinky finger.

44 Years old, tried to play guitar very randomly over the years (which means I can kind of play Enter Sandman and Disarm very horribly and thats about it). Always wanted a bass, finally bought one in Feb of this year. Had no idea what I was doing, other than I could already read basic tabs,

I ended up watching a lot of Josh’s youtube videos, and although I’m certainly not one to just buy online courses, his style really hit home for me. I’m certainly glad I did. I just finished it (which I did over some months, making sure I could play each lesson on fast) and the musical understanding, finger placements, and ease of which I can now look up tabs and give the song a go is a monumental increase in ability since day 1. I would highly recommend this course to any beginner Bass enthusiast. This course has almost single handedly made me interested in jamming with a band, which I’ve already been out to do a couple of times. I would have never even thought about it prior to taking this course.

Thank you Josh, keep making excellent content!

Beginner to BadAss Review

It started with Josh’s funny YouTube videos… I was learning songs through play along tabs there… and this Josh guy kept showing up. I clicked, and found a funny informative resource for all things bass!

I wanted to check on this course he kept plugging… so I naturally went to reddit. I was hard pressed to find even a single negative comment on reddit about this course, so I took the plunge.

Now… having completed the course ( at Warp Factor 9 ): Here are my thoughts:

For beginners, this is BAR NONE the very best bass course anyone could want to take. FULL STOP.

The friendly demeanor of Josh all through the course, and his teaching style does not make you fear him… but makes you WANT to learn from him. He would be the guy in REAL life you would want to have as a bass instructor.

The way the lessons are laid out is MASTERFUL… the difficulty grade is not so steep that you want to give up, and not so shallow that its a cakewalk either. There are a few notable spikes ( Billy Jean … lookin at you, same with you Papa ) …these though are a needed part of learning. And when these challenges are beaten… you feel AMAZING!

Josh also has this neat trick of ā€˜teaching it forward’ which he uses all through the course. You will be doing this one thing … for 4 or 5 lessons… and then Josh will say ā€œYa, that thing we have been doing… is called THIS, and here is how we USE IT nowā€

I tore through the course… I have had previous bass experience in a road band… but have been away for 20 years… and this was PERFECT for getting someone right back in the pocket. I got rid of some bad habits, and learned a great deal of theory in a FUN way!

I could go on for days why this course is worth every dollar… But it’s true… It really is an investment! The best investment I have made in a long time.

The extras that come with the course include all the backing material from all the lessons, the theory, and a forum full of new friends, who also are bass badasses!

Thank you Josh for all the hard work you put into this AMAZING course!

I bought a bass guitar in June 2020 influenced by Davie504. I had tried to learn guitar before, but I didn’t feel a ā€œconnectionā€ with the instrument. With the bass, though, I felt chemistry. I looked up various tutorial videos, books, online and in-person courses, but none of the instructors explained things in an organized way. There wasn’t even a step-by-step guide to track progress or follow a clear path for learning. Additionally, I felt like the instructors assumed that, as a student, you already knew music theory or how to play another instrument. I also tried the game Rocksmith 2014 Remastered, but I wasn’t really learning anything; I was just playing the notes shown by the game. And now I know that some of the songs are incorrectly transcribed (now I know, xD).

Then I came across Josh’s videos on YouTube, and his explanations were sublime. Clear, concise, and full of tips for situations I was personally experiencing. The first video I watched was: Make Your Sh*tty Bass Play Like a DREAM (5 Steps)

After watching several of his videos, I enrolled in his online course. I won’t lie, at first, I thought it was expensive compared to other courses available online. But now that I’ve finished it, I can confidently say it was worth every dollar. It’s a complete course, with clear goals, focused on specific activities, and complemented by music theory. I felt that I had truly learned something every time I completed a section. By the next section, I could already read the tablature, relied less on looking at the bass, and focused on following the tab. I learned where many notes are located on the bass, mastered the major and minor scales, and even started improvising (the best part of the course: jam sessions).

It took me about nine months to finish the course. I thought I would complete it in three months, but life happens, and I have to dedicate time to other activities.

Although English is not my native language, that wasn’t a limitation. Josh explains each concept in simple words and the visual support is excellent.

In summary: highly recommended! I learned more during these nine months compared to all the random, disorganized videos I watched online. It’s a well-structured course, and Josh is attentive in the forums, answering questions and providing solutions. Now I can confidently say I can play the bass guitar, follow and learn a song, and know what I’m doing.

l’ve made it through the final chapter. It took me 1 and a half months to get there. And I am very impressed by how much I have learned in that short period.
Ok, I don’t start right at the beginning, because I have been playing E-Guitar as a Kid, but that is 25 years ago.
The lectures were greatly built on each other. And for me it was the right mixture of challenging tasks and easy ones.

I’m looking forward for the part 2. For that I hope for more iconic songs, more insights on how to keep track of complex baselines and deeper insights into theory (maybe 7, 9 and 13)

The Beginner to Badass course is one of the best thought out, organized, and presented courses I have ever seen. If you are learning bass guitar, you should absolutely take it.

I have taught/instructed a number of disciplines from grade school science and math, to social dancing, to high performance driving. I am a strong critic of teaching methods. B2B is fantastic. It very clearly presents topics in manageable chunks following a very practical progression.

Josh is an excellent instructor. He clearly communicates what he wants you to learn. He presents with genuine energy and enthusiasm, not over-animated pandering or anything.

The course is aimed at students who are new to the bass and have little to no prior music background. If you have already been playing bass for a while, it is probably not for you. If you have other musical background but are new to bass (my experience), much of the theory will be review, but you are unlikely to feel bored. Because the course is laid out well, you also have the option of accelerating your pace through earlier modules by doing things like skipping slow or medium workouts and just playing the full-speed workouts.

I found Josh presented many musical theory concepts much better than prior teachers I’ve had. I had a number of ā€œah-ha!ā€ moments of theory concept I sort-of understood previously.

It can catch people up because it intentionally pushes students’ skill level and will present exercises that it does not expect students to get at full speed their first time through. If you are not aware of this, it can be frustrating, but they generally do a good job of communicating expectations for first-time players.

Most of the weaknesses of the course are purely the nature of being online rather than in person. But I found this to be far more valuable than an in-person instructor. It is not perfect, but is as close to as realistically possible.

I recommend this course as highly as possible.

I thought the course was definitely worthwhile back when i took it a few years ago. In going through the lessons again out of curiosity, I can easily find the new stuff because Josh is playing a bass with (bleepin’) fret markers!!

Minor update: The quality of Bass Buzz content and the B2B course is really apparent when watching other stuff.

Another TLA Bass course recently uploaded a course from the archives up onto YouTube as a free teaser. And it is frustrating the heck out of me. It is organized and presented so badly compared to what Bass Buzz puts out.

Not clear what skill level of student this is aimed at or what the expectations for learning are. Excessive time of the instructor talking or showing off his playing skills rather than directing the students on what THEY should be doing to build THEIR skills. Regularly introducing concepts or terms without defining them. There is useful information, but it’s buried.

These shortcomings of other courses really highlight and help me appreciate just how fantastic Bass Buzz and B2B are.

Having completed the course…

This is an easy, accessible way to introduce yourself to bass AND to music in general. I’ve been an amateur musician (and professional educator) for decades found Josh’s methods and philosophy incredibly informative and supportive. It’s a well-thought out program designed with an actual understanding of how humans learn new things. Taking this course as a person who has never picked up a bass, I made real progress and am casually jamming with friends now.

For most beginners, I also think it’s a better alternative to private lessons. You can do it daily without disrupting your schedule or wearing yourself out with practice and the frequent, short classes result in a better learning experience.

So much good stuff to say, but you get the idea.

I’m going to risk coming off way too sentimental and emotional here, but I actually cried at the end of the final jam.

I’ve been trying to get out of the beginner valley of suck as a musician for 2 years. I spent about a year and a half trying and failing to teach myself guitar, and I fell out of love with the instrument because the things I thought were cool about it weren’t what 99% of people were telling me I needed to practice to get good at it.

On a whim, I decided to get a cheapo bass cause I figured it was worth trying to see if I’d find it fun, and what do you know, I found it way more fun than regular guitar. It emphasized all the elements I loved, and took away all the elements I didn’t. I felt so much stronger of a connection to the bass than the guitar, but there was a problem: Teaching myself bass still felt impossible.

When you’re beginning with any hobby, there’s this valley of suckage you have you escape from, it’s really hard to get good enough at the hobby so that it actually starts being fun and you stop having that constant feeling of ā€œWow I suckā€ hanging over your head, and I was stuck in that valley until I took the B2B course.

I was blown away with how fast I was progressing, I couldn’t believe I was able to play the instrument without it hurting, I finally realized why my technique sucked, I knew how to adjust the position while seated to be more comfortable. Then I was blown away that I learned a scale for real, and I was able to improvise anything at all. Then I was blown away that I was playing songs like Roxanne and Feel Good Inc. as well as being able to improvise something decent.

Imagine the shock on my face when I finish Module 15 after 2 months of doing the course and realize that I’ve officially become badass, I’m confident, competent, and prepared to go jam with someone right now if I was asked to.

I never thought I’d get out of that valley of suck, I never thought I’d actually become competent as a musician, I was worried it’d be a dream I never got to live out. Josh & the whole BassBuzz team were eager to prove me wrong though. Thanks to this course, I was able to actually realize my dream. My late father was so excited and proud of me when I crappily and sloppily scraped my way through the simplest of guitar riffs years and years ago, and I just know that wherever he is now, he’s the proudest dad in all of existence. It feels so good to finally be as excited about my progress as he was, It feels like I’ve really made him proud.

I’m so excited to go forth and keep practicing, getting better, making music, and feeling the bass buzz. Thanks to the whole team for making this course happen, I’m so happy to have had Josh as my bass teacher, and I will absolutely be recommending this course any time it’ll be appropriate to do so.
