TL;DR: Share your favorite rock bass lines from songs that came out this year, to possibly be featured in a video!
So remember when I made that Spotify video that was a little bit of a bummer?
This is my next attempt at a “Josh listens to music, breaks down the bass lines / coolness of it, explains cool things, and is generally entertaining” type video.
I’d like to make a curated list of good contemporary songs with good bass playing (not necessarily flashy), so that what I’m listening/reacting to is… actually worth listening/reacting to. Songs that you’d still wanna hear in a year, or two, or five, or… larger numbers. (you know how numbers work)
I know you cool cats are all listening to all kinds of interesting stuff around the world, and I’d like to feature some of your picks in the video! So hit me with what you’ve been into lately, only requirements are:
Could be (quite) loosely defined as rock
Came out in 2023
You like it
Excited to hear what y’all hit me with!
PS thanks for all your tremendous help in the Spotify feedback thread, I’m excited by everything I’ve learned and to make a better thing.
I’d toss a vote in for Metallica’s “72 Seasons” album… more metal than rock (but that’s arguable these days).
Stand-out songs for me… “Shadows Follow”, “Room of Mirrors” and “You Must Burn” (edit addition: “Too Far Gone”). Nothing here is particularly intricate in terms of bass lines, but Robert brings his usual bit of funk and is a great pocket player bringing the songs together and supporting the guitars and keeping the groove.
And switching gears a bit, I quite enjoy the bass line in the new Duo Lipa song from the Barbie movie “Dance The Night” - this is definitely more pop than rock, but it’s got that disco-funk thing going for it (like with some of her other tracks, I suspect this was done on a virtual instrument and not a real bass, but its good none-the-less).
Yeah. Joey Howard has been their touring bassist for some time but I’m not sure if he plays the bass in the studio recordings. I am also not sure why they never included a full-time bassist in the band after Jeremy Davis left (kicked out?).
I’ve had BAND-MAID suggested to me on Spotify playlists a few times, have really enjoyed what I’ve heard, there’s some real crunchy bass in some of the tracks!
