Birth year bass

I know some watch collectors have a birth year watch but is this a thing for bassists?

It would be cool to have a 78 fender but those can get pretty pricey. A T-40 would work though, or maybe a Greco.

Do you have a birth year bass?

Just did a quick search on reverb :scream:

I think a 1957 bass might be out of my budget. At least one that still works! (unlike me!!!)

All of my searches for 1980’s bass seem to have shag carpet, cheap wood paneling, or cigarette cartons on them…

On second thought… Go home Gibson, you’re drunk!

Actually I could almost be tempted by this (if I was a collector) but three grand is a little too much for my pocket!

That big upright bass in the back looks like it is sending it’s kindergartener off to school for its first day.

I got lucky. The first P-bass wasn’t introduced until 1951… a year after I was born. An original '51 is priced at $32,950.00. Instead of birth year, how about a person’s first bass? We all remember our first. Mine was a 1964 J-bass. They’re much cheaper… just $20,000. I did find one that’s the same year as the last bass I owned, a '72 Jazz. Not nearly as much but still at a price that will keep me a one-and-done player. Anyone else owning or searching for a nostalgia buy?

I think mine was an SG clone in the early 90’s (I didn’t pay enough for it to be a real SG). I played 6 string back then and picked up a cheap bass at a pawn shop to mess around with. After Presidents of the USA, I ended up doing some weird stringings with it, Like D and G from a bass and E and A strings from a guitar. I think it worked about as well as you’re probably thinking it worked.

I bought a Squier 40th anniversary jazz bass for my 40th birthday. It has my birth year on the neck plate.

I just got trolled by searching for one and it popped up this horrific monstrosity:

It’s like nearly everything I dislike in basses rolled up in to one fugly whole. And Scott called it “stunning” out of some kind of misplaced worship of old fender things.

  • bad burst (as was the fashion at the time)
  • tort
  • beat to crap in ways that stopped looking good by their second or third careless owner
  • pointless chrome
  • the usual J-bass control plate looking especially too shiny here
  • it’s a J

Neck looks good though.

That’s much better. Still not my favorite pups but there’s nothing fundamentally wrong with that one. Great looking neck too.
