Ahh yes the subs, that was it.
This is what I use for compressors in Abelton. The CLA-76 and CLA-2A. They are terrific.
this is a whole other level of going big. you have a compressor pedal that costs more than literally 95% of everyone here’s entire bass rigs. wow, I mean wow. impressive
I have saxophone mouthpieces that cost me more than the compressor did. Everything’s relative. Lol
Just got myself an Electro Harmonix Bass Preacher. It has two knobs, so still way too many, but one of them is a Volume knob, so I can live with that. Have only played around with it a little, but I like it so far.
Ahh but the Bass Preacher is clever. The Volume knob is not output level; it’s the makeup gain on the compression
Which is great, that’s an important control to have. Think of it as the “loudness” knob. It’s how much you’re boosting the body of the signal in relation to the parts that get limited/compressed. So you can increase the overall loudness without increasing the output level of the peaks.
Correct, @howard! Incidentally, the one I got (pre-owned) suffered from what is apparently a quite common issue: I had to crank up the “volume”/makeup gain all the way to the maximum to get a decent output level. It was, in fact, still lower than in bypass mode. Unfortunately, this increased the noise level as well.
As it turns out, there’s a gain trim pot on the inside of the pedal that can be tweaked to remediate this. I followed the instructions in this YouTube video to set it to unity gain with the “volume” knob at twelve o’clock, and hey presto, no more noise:
Actually, it’s now surprisingly quiet! And it provides some boosting headroom if needed
