Exactly the same for the Blackstar! It was not necessary per sé, but I replaced them with Gotoh’s - just because
i also really like my kala solid body. a big step up from previous attempts by them, and a hell of a lot cheaper too.
My 17" Mayones Cali 4 (1450 € + 20% VAT) and Cali 5 (1470 € + 20% VAT), shipping free in the EU. Tuned an octave higher than a standard bass. Aux input for backing tracks. Phones output for silent practice. Rechargeable via USB-C for the active preamp (like on an airplane or train!). Passive mode if you run out of battery (but that will also likely kill the Aux and Phones). Mayones has private-label strings for them.
Ouch!
Happy to report that Kala Ubass QA/QC is excellent no issues for me. It looks great and plays really well. It has the inherent super short scale problems. The normal short scale strings can’t produce enough brightness and full tonal spectrum.
I swapped the string out to Dogal, while it’s very expensive the Kala sounds just like another bass, which is a huge task for such a small instrument.
An alternative are the Blackstar strings. They are cheap (about 20€), sound great … and come in 125-105-85-65 custom gauge
Scale Length: 23.46" (527mm)
Yeah my Dogal is 105-45. same as most of my bass string.
The biggest task for small, mini or even the other end of the spectrum is to sound and probably feel the same as “normal”
Ir’s a one time spending so I don’t mind the extra as long as I get what I paid for.
I did not test 105 on my tiny bass. But isn’t it true that you need a thicker string on a shorter bass to have a similar experience as on a longer bass?
Anyway, I played my little Blackstar in Drop D tuning, no problem. It’s missing highs and some mids - but it has it’s own, very punchy character.
As soon as I have put some PUs in it (ripped out the active EMG P for the other mods), I will play it again.
All those discussions sparked my faded interest…
Something gotta give if you use a thicker gauge on such small instrument.
That’s why the Dogal is so expensive, they are handmade one at a time and the material cost is much much higher than their other string as well. watch the video I posted earlier from Bass the world.
Good to know, can you please write me the exact specifications for the Dogal?
