At our jam the other day I was noodling a little (as you do) and played the main descending riff in Echoes.
Now the guitarist/keyboard player’s ears prick up, and a thought slowly develops and over the next few days he suggests that our 3-piece could do a version of Echoes.
Inspired by this I have been listening to all the versions and now have an earworm problem, I have been looking at tabs and chord charts.
I can play the parts, kind of, but I feel that my muscular stumps will not do it justice.
My question here is: do you have any songs you would love to be able to play but worry that you will not do it justice, or even ruin, by doing so.
I should add here that Echoes is probably my favourite Pink Floyd piece and up there with favourite songs. It is so good Andrew Lloyd Webber pinched the riff.
I have a long list of songs that would require me months of work to nail ![]()
But are you worried that you will never do them justice.
You see I love Echoes-I think I could play the bits but I feel that my playing would not be “worthy”

Nah and I think you are selling yourself short here. Roger Waters is just another guy; a gifted and talented one for sure but still.
I’m getting ready to record one of mine this weekend. I don’t know why but all of Joy Division’s songs are like that for me.
You can do them. I tackled Disorder in my first or second year of playing and am so glad I made myself do it. TBH singing it was much harder for me than the bass ![]()
Absoutely, I guess it is that song as a whole seems close to perfection to me and I can’t imagine getting close.
Waters tone and rhythm is on point in so many ways but the way everything locks together, drums, keys, guitar, seagulls…
Yeah I totally get this. I have songs I dearly love as well.
One thing I have come to realize is that I actually dislike covering other bands’ material in ways that minic the originals, which is kind of the same thing as you are feeling I guess - and is why I haven’t done many covers recently. I realized I don’t really like doing it.
It’s interesting because my favorite cover songs by other bands are never the ones that track close to the originals either.
I sound fantastic singing Ian’s stuff when I’m in the shower ![]()
Stuff like Joy Division or Interpol are right in my range. If I were ever to try singing anything, it’d be something by one of them.
I think that’s my issue with Hooky’s bass lines. I just don’t feel like I could ever do them justice.
Some of his lines are hard simply because he forged his own way differently from how “proper” bassists played. But once you get in to them some aren’t so difficult. Disorder is a great example.
Others are simply physically hard to play (at least for me) because they are just so all over the neck. The one I am thinking of here that stands out as being so uniquely his style and difficult to get right is Perfect Kiss. Also, al the tabs I have ever found for it are wildly inaccurate.
Sounds like you need a Bass VI ![]()
lol me too! Unfortunately once recorded, less so ![]()
I might at some point. I didn’t gel with the squier / fender version. I’d probably have a bit more fun with one now that I can play a bit of guitar
Mine is a Harley Benton, I am also in the middle of converting a Hofner clone to a VI
I might try with a Gretsch baritone when I can get one for a price that I think is worth it. It’s just a string change with one of those.
Are you kidding?
I could only play less than 10% of songs I listen to. I’ve been trying to nail Donna Lee, I just have to hear it right first, ![]()

Good point. Yeah I am not getting anywhere near Kiyoshi or F-Chopper levels any time soon, lol.
I transcribe the first half of this song (first 3 and a half minutes) last year but transcribing is not the same as playing it. ![]()
Anyone wants to collab just let me know.
Uh, yeah, everything ![]()
