Just reading the works of Alan Moore would be a good and often profound start. Watchmen, V for Vendetta, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen…
Wow, gaunlet of comprehensive graphic novel knowledge laid DOWN, thanks Kristine!
That would be very helpful, I cracked open The Odyssey in a bookstore this weekend and thought “damnit I’m NEVER going to actually read this.”
I’ll have to bring it as an attraction in my BassBuzz traveling circus. “See the amazing color changing pickguard! Watch as Noob Josh sucks at bass from an amazing height of 2 FEET OFF THE GROUNDDDDDD”
+++ for Le Guin, I love her worlds so much. I read all the Earthsea books in lightweight paperback, now I have the monster illustrated hardback that I’ll probably never actually lift off the shelf, but it’s so pretty.
I tried the first Lilith’s Brood by Butler, didn’t enjoy it, but maybe I should give another series a whirl.
Wowwww, thanks for sharing the image, what a brilliant idea to break the mobius strip across panels/time like that. Trippy.
Yeeaaaah, Lilith’s Brood is prob not the one to start with. Kindred or Parable of the Sower are better intro points, I think.
PS:
I’d pay to see that. How is Noob Josh please tell him I said hello! ![]()
This is amazing.
As a former book store employee and a forever book store employee-Emeritus and eternal lover of books, best of all luck and fortune to you in your shop!!
That’s awesome.
If you do special orders and it makes sense for a Californian to order from you, let me know!
Full throated recommendation for “The Wicked + The Divine” - it takes place in a world where every 90 years, a group of 12 mythological deities awaken inside the bodies of teenagers. They become the most crazy famous and powerful people on the planet…for two years. After that, they’ll all be dead. I think I’ve seen it described as a pop music murder mystery - it’s soapy, twisty, and delves into the dark mechanics of making regular people into myths.
For an even more heady psychological thriller that mixes music and magic (especially if you like Britpop) check out Phonogram, an earlier series by the same author/illustrator team (Kieron Gillon and Jamie McKelvie.) It’s about people called “Phonomancers” who use music to perform spells, and it’s all about how we consume and interpret the music we listen to.
I see that 2000AD are publishing some graphic novels.
I used to devour and re-read the comics, I inherited a fruit box containing a decade of consecutive issues.
Some got damaged by a cat and I lost the whole lot in a move eventually.

Lots of great stories in them, if interested look for the Slaine Horned God series and the Ballad of Halo Jones (loved this story arc)
Judge Dredd and Nemesis the Warlock are good too.
Heaps of others.
