Flat wound vs round wound strings

I recently put a set of DR Black Beauties on my Fender PJ and I really like them. The Black Beauties are coated stainless rounds. They really sing on that bass and they look awesome.

One is always free to put a lift kit and 35s on a honda civic if they really want to

Keep the flats on the P, @JDDaniel ,
I have flats on both a P & J and they are definitely better suited to the P.
Maybe because i use the P’s a lot more, but i am a flats man.
That is IMO only,
Cheers Brian

@TNKA36 Brian,

What I should do, is just buy two more basses (or I will never catch up with your collection) another P & a J with rounds on them so I have a P & J with flats and rounds at my disposal.

Cheers mate!

I got rid of my Schecter, so my stable is pretty bare…

Perfect opportunity @JDDaniel , did you end up riding the HOG over to see the benefit concert on the weekend???

No, had a family commitment come up, but I hate that I missed it. Now that I know there is a fellow BassBuzz’er in Houston, I will be on the lookout for their next gig.

I beleive this is reason #4 as to why one needs a new bass.

My obsession at the moment is exploring guitars and strings. I have an Alder Jazz in BEAD Tuning with rounds, a second Alder Jazz which will get a kickass bridge and some Motown flats tonight, an Alder PJ with flats, a Maple body PJ with rounds, and somewhere in FedEx hell an ash body with dual split humbuckers and rounds

So I got gas, but not for pedals.

Get yourself a foam paintbrush and cut it down as a mute for those 1954s and you will be Motown-ing away.

I’ve done 2 covers so far with many more planned.

Same here (VTBass DI). I’ve grown away from the ā€œPedalmaniaā€ thing and am getting my pedals and board ready to list on Reverb.
I also have the Zoom B3n, but only use it sparingly.

Well, I have come a-ā€œroundā€ wanting rounds on a jazz bass, so I have one with flats and one with rounds. Just can’t decide which bass to put them on. Squier, Aerodyne or maybe the Ray4 with the SIMs. But I am missing something in my jazz bass sound that I see others have.

The ā€œzing zingā€ is what’s not there. I have Rotosound Swing Bass SS rounds on my JJ, and they sound amazing. Flats really mute the trebly-farty quality of the J bridge pickup, which is one of the defining characteristics of the jazz bass after all.

I seem to remember that you also have noticed the Rotosounds in a comparison and liked them. Give them a whirl. The SIMray would be a good platform to explore all of the frequency ranges of these strings, but I think the Squier or Aerodyne would be a more classic combo.

And that is just what I ordered to put on one.
And I think it will be the SIMs (if it ever comes back from the luthier for the custom pickguard (we are over 2 months in now, not happy)

Just like me and my Seymour Duncan SH pups. Resilient supply chains my a$$.

How do those Rotosounds feel to the touch? My disdain for that corduroy feel of round wounds is well known in this forum, but I’m always open to try rounds that don’t feel like they’re going to rip the skin off my fingers.

They’re actually fairly inexpensive on Amazon, which of these do you have/recommend?

I have the RS66LD (standard gauge). That said, they are uncoated SS rounds, so cheese grater is a great description and they would totally be not in your area of interest.

I would think that these, nickel coated SS may be more to your liking. I haven’t owned a set of these, but I have played them in a music store and they have a similar tone to mine, but are much slicker to the touch. Obviously, YMMV, but they did feel smoother.

Thanks, I ordered a set. Fortunately, round wounds tend to be about half the price of flats, so I don’t mind rolling the dice on a set.

If worse comes to worse, I can always just wear a glove. I have plenty of different types of gloves laying around the house.

This is true.

The good news is on a coated round wound, your finger can glide over faster and smoother(predictable) than smooth finish flats which tends to stick from time to time. I’ve always believed that’s it’s the other way around.

Beside calluses on your fingertips is considered the right of passage. It doesn’t matter if you are young or old and any of the 4 genders the god of pain treat you the same.
