Flat wound vs round wound strings

It’s just being shipped. I will let you know when it gets here. In a week.

What about DR Pure Blues? Only ever used DR Black Beauties from them but that’s a different vibe

Pure Blues would be most awesome on that build. The feel and tension are great. I had them on my Jazz but switched to HiBeams cause I was messing around with different strings. DR just makes great strings no matter what they are. BTW, Andy at SW uses Pure Blues for most of his playing. He swears by them.

I quite like them - feel and sound! A bit “dirtier” than TI rounds.

They are Victor Wooten’s go-to strings.

Yes, they are. If only a little Wooten would rub off by playing them.

If you are being ‘authentic’ then flats, as they were the only strings that existed when that style bass was a thing initially. But, you can do whatever the heck you want, lol

Don’t we always in the end lol.

Rounds were too twangy for me, and bothered my fingers. I recently put on a set of Bass Boomers on my MDB5 with the Steve Harris pickup, and I really like the tone.

Maybe the best plan is to put the TIs on the new bass, that was the plan, and put DR Pure Blues on the Sire with the JBE Blade pickup, which is hardly vintage. That I think will be the ticket

If I wanna try out flats what would be a good starter set? And would it make more sense to put them on a p or j bass?

LaBellas are LaBomb.

They are great on either P or J
P is Motown / 50s rock

Fender Flats…cheap, smooth and really nice for the price.

If I were to just take flats for a spin, I would probably do Fender for traditional flats.

For modern flats I would do D’Addario Chrome Flats. Modern flats have more mids and highs than traditional flats, really a different sound altogether.

Fender and D’Addario are affordable and sound good and let you get your toes wet.

Ty @EddieJones @Wombat-metal @John_E decided to do a test drive on the Fender flats. If I like it I will also try out the La Bella’s. Great tips! :+1:

If like me you really like the Fender flats, you may just keep them on. I have them on my LTD B50 FM and will never take the off. They sound great on that bass.

Whatever you do, don’t try Thomastik Infeld Jazz Flats.

They’ll spoil you for other flats.

Oh, yes…or the Jazz Rounds. They are awesome. I have the Rounds on my Ray34 and the Flats on my 54P. They will never come off.

Well, I have no idea what flats are on my p, but they feel about as smooth to play as rubber bands, literally! :joy:
Even just plucking, fingers really feel like they stick and drag across them :face_with_raised_eyebrow: slides… Forget it! :joy:

You must be one of those! (people that like higher tension strings)

Try finger ease. Does wonders

I tried fast fret, wasn’t really any better, I think they’re just cheap crap :joy: sound so dead compared to the old SX p bass I had a while back, that thing sounded awesome! Just a shame I couldn’t get used to it being a short scale

DR strings generally feel really good under the fingers. Doesn’t hurt that they all sound awesome too. Get you some and forget the rest.
